Free online FH8 to JPG converter

Modern image viewers and many editing or publishing applications do not open archived FH8 files, so a JPG is needed for viewing, sharing, web use, or email. Converting the document creates a broadly compatible image but removes FreeHand’s editable vector structure.

What the FH8 format is

FH8 is the native document format of Macromedia FreeHand 8, a discontinued vector-graphics and page-layout application. It is found in archived logos, illustrations, advertisements, technical drawings, and older print-production files.

An FH8 document can contain vector paths, text, fills, layers, placed images, and references to linked external files. It is not a standard bitmap image, so current operating systems and image viewers generally cannot open it directly. A compatible FreeHand installation may open files created by earlier releases, but document compatibility is not guaranteed.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a compressed raster-image format supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, and most image editors. Its relatively small files are useful for previews, websites, catalogs, and email.

JPG stores pixels rather than editable paths, text, or layers. It also has no transparency support, so it is appropriate when a flattened image is required, not when the artwork must remain editable or retain transparent areas.

How to convert the file

Quality and compatibility limitations

The conversion rasterizes the artwork: vector paths and text become pixels, and the JPG cannot be edited as a FreeHand document. Use larger output dimensions when small text or thin lines must remain legible.

JPEG compression can create halos or block artifacts around sharp vector edges and text. Choose the highest practical quality, and avoid repeatedly opening and resaving the JPG. Use PNG instead when transparent areas, crisp line art, or lossless output are required.

Fonts unavailable on the conversion system may be substituted, changing text layout. Linked images may be missing if they were not embedded or supplied with the FH8 file. Retain the original .fh8 file, fonts where licensing permits, and all linked assets for archival or future editing.
