How to convert bmp to jpg file

Some websites, phones, office applications, and image editors accept JPG but reject BMP, while uncompressed BMP files can be too large for email, uploads, or storage. Converting produces a smaller, widely supported file, but JPG compression can remove detail and cannot retain transparency.

What the BMP format is

BMP, or Bitmap Image File, stores an image as pixel data and is associated with Microsoft Windows and older desktop graphics software. Microsoft Paint, scanners, screenshots, legacy applications, and desktop publishing tools can create BMP files.

BMP supports 1-bit, grayscale, indexed-color, and full-color RGB images. Most BMP files are uncompressed, although some variants use lossless RLE compression; the format can therefore be much larger than JPG for the same dimensions. BMP versions can contain alpha or transparency data, but applications do not handle that data consistently.

What JPG is and why it is smaller

JPG, also called JPEG, is a raster image format that uses lossy compression. It is widely supported by web browsers, phones, operating systems, office software, image editors, and social platforms.

JPEG compression reduces file size by discarding image information that is less noticeable in photographs and other continuous-tone images. JPG is suitable for photographs, many scans, and images with gradients. It is less suitable for small text, screenshots with sharp lettering, pixel art, diagrams, logos, and images that will be edited and saved repeatedly.

How to convert BMP to JPG

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the BMP-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
  2. Select or upload a file such as picture.bmp.
  3. Choose JPG or JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting picture.jpg, then check its dimensions, colors, and detail in an image viewer.

Do not upload confidential or regulated images to any online converter unless its handling and retention policies are acceptable for that file.

Using Microsoft Paint on Windows

  1. Open picture.bmp in Paint.
  2. Select File → Save as → JPEG picture.
  3. Enter a new filename ending in .jpg and select Save.

Paint is adequate for a single basic conversion but offers little control over JPEG quality. If the BMP contains transparency, Paint may flatten it against a background color.

Using Preview on macOS

  1. Open the BMP in Preview.
  2. Select File → Export.
  3. Set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider, choose a destination, and select Save.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is useful for repeatable or batch conversions. A single file can be converted with:

magick picture.bmp -quality 90 picture.jpg

On a Unix-like shell, this command converts files with lowercase .bmp extensions in the current directory:

for f in *.bmp; do magick "$f" -quality 90 "${f%.bmp}.jpg"; done

ImageMagick’s -quality setting normally uses a scale from 1 to 100; higher values generally preserve more detail and create larger files. A value around 85–95 is a practical starting range for photographs, but the result should be inspected rather than judged by the number alone.

Quality and compatibility limits

Saving a JPG repeatedly can add block artifacts, ringing around text, and blurred fine detail. Convert from the original BMP when possible, use a high enough quality setting, and retain the original until the JPG has been checked at 100% magnification.

JPG has no alpha channel and cannot preserve transparency. Transparent areas from a BMP must be composited onto a solid background during conversion. Use PNG instead when transparency, crisp line art, text, or lossless editing is required.

Conversion normally changes the encoding, not the pixel dimensions: a 3000 × 2000 BMP remains 3000 × 2000 pixels unless resizing is also selected. JPEG cannot restore detail already missing from a low-resolution or previously compressed source.

Color profiles and metadata may be changed or removed by the converter. For broad compatibility, use an RGB output when the software offers a color-mode choice, and compare the JPG with the BMP if accurate color or embedded metadata matters.
