Some older Office documents, organization charts, and HTML emails contain data that a receiving program or device cannot open as .mso. Converting the rendered content to .jpg creates a broadly compatible static image for sharing, web use, or archiving.
What the MSO format is
.mso is not one universal image format. It can identify files created by the old Microsoft Organization Chart application, Office-specific auxiliary data associated with HTML email or exported web pages, and other Microsoft Office content.
An email may include an .mso file alongside an HTML message, while an organization chart may have been saved directly as an .mso project. The file may contain Office object data rather than a complete bitmap, so ordinary image editors and many converters cannot open it. Renaming .mso to .jpg changes only the filename and does not convert the contents.
What the JPG format is
JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster format for photographs, web images, previews, and email attachments. Its lossy compression produces relatively small files, but it discards editable objects, document structure, and usually transparent backgrounds.
JPEG is suitable for photographic or continuously shaded content. PNG is normally better for organization charts, screenshots, logos, diagrams, small text, sharp lines, or transparency because JPEG compression can create halos and block artifacts.
How to convert an MSO file
When it belongs to an email or HTML export
- Open the original message in Outlook or the HTML file in the application that produced it. An
.msofile opened by itself may not contain enough information to display anything. - If the visible object is a picture, right-click it and choose Save Picture As. Select JPEG if the application offers a format choice.
- If direct saving is unavailable, display the object at its intended size and capture it with Windows Snipping Tool, macOS Screenshot, or an equivalent capture utility.
- Open the capture in Microsoft Paint, macOS Preview, or another image editor and use Save as or Export to select
JPEG. Use PNG instead when the content contains text or line art.
When it is an Office or organization-chart object
- Locate the original Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or HTML file, or install the legacy Microsoft Organization Chart application if the
.msois an organization-chart project. - Open the object in its originating application. For an embedded chart or drawing, select it and use the available Save as Picture command, or copy it into PowerPoint or another Office application that provides that command.
- Choose JPEG for photographic content. Choose PNG for a chart, diagram, logo, or text-heavy object.
If the .mso is only a companion file, convert the original document instead. PowerPoint can export a slide with File → Export → JPEG. Word and Excel can often save a selected object through Save as Picture; for a complete page or worksheet, export to PDF and rasterize the required page with an image editor or PDF application.
When the original application is unavailable
Inspect the filename, neighboring files, and the file header with a text or file-identification utility to determine whether it came from an email, HTML export, or organization chart. Do not expect a text editor or archive utility to reconstruct a missing visual object.
As a fallback, open the related HTML file or email in a browser or mail client, set a suitable zoom level, capture the rendered content, and export the capture as JPEG. This recovers only what the application can display.
Using an online converter
CloudConvert, Zamzar, and Convertio are established online conversion services, but direct MSO support is inconsistent. Use one only when its current upload page explicitly accepts .mso and produces a verifiable preview or download. If it rejects the file, convert the originating Office document or capture the rendered object instead. Do not upload confidential email, business documents, or personal data to a third-party service.
Quality and compatibility limitations
A capture omits hidden content, editable layers, hyperlinks, animation, and some metadata. Increase the application window, display scaling, or document zoom before capturing; enlarging a small capture afterward cannot restore detail.
Use the highest practical JPEG quality, typically 90–100, when text or fine detail must remain readable. JPEG does not preserve transparency and is unsuitable for repeated editing because each re-save can add compression loss. Keep the original .mso and source document when future editing or exact reproduction may be required.

Will my editable MSO content stay editable after converting it to JPG?
No, the result is a flattened picture rather than an editable Office object. Text, drawing elements, embedded objects, and other internal structure become pixels and cannot be reliably restored by converting the JPG back.
Does MSO to JPG remove transparency and reduce image quality?
Yes, JPG does not preserve transparency and uses lossy compression, which can add artifacts around text and sharp edges. The visible quality depends on the resolution used to render the MSO content and the JPG compression setting.
Will all of my MSO content appear in the JPG?
Only content that can be rendered as a visible image will appear, and a JPG represents one flat image rather than the original Office structure. Hidden objects, unsupported embedded content, metadata, and content outside the rendered area may be omitted.
Why does my MSO file produce a blank or incorrect JPG?
An MSO file may be an embedded Office object or email-related package rather than a self-contained page, so it needs the correct rendering context to display properly. Missing fonts, linked content, unsupported objects, or an MSO variant that is not directly renderable can cause missing or misplaced content.
