Free online ERF to JPG converter

Epson ERF camera RAW files need conversion when a photo editor, browser, printer, or sharing platform accepts JPG but not the original RAW format. JPG is also easier to archive and distribute, although converting it discards some RAW editing flexibility.

What the ERF format is

ERF usually means Epson RAW Format, a digital-camera RAW format associated with Epson cameras such as the R-D1. It stores minimally processed sensor data along with camera metadata, so exposure, white balance, color rendering, and detail can be adjusted during RAW development.

You may encounter ERF files after copying photographs from an Epson camera or opening an archive created by an older photo-management application. The extension is not a universal image standard; if the file did not come from a camera, confirm its source before treating it as an image.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is an 8-bit compressed image format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office applications, printers, and nearly all photo-sharing services. Its small size makes it suitable for email, websites, previews, and general-purpose photo storage.

JPG uses lossy compression, so it is best for finished images rather than repeated editing. The conversion creates a rendered photograph; it does not preserve the full sensor data contained in the ERF file.

How to convert ERF to JPG

Using RawTherapee

1. Install RawTherapee and open the folder containing the .erf file in the File Browser.
2. Open the photograph in the Editor and adjust exposure, white balance, color, cropping, and noise reduction as needed.
3. Send the image to the queue, or use File → Save if you only need the current image.
4. In the export settings, choose JPEG, select the output folder, and set quality to about 90–95 for high-quality viewing. Use 75–85 for smaller web files.
5. Start processing and check that the resulting filename ends in .jpg.

RawTherapee can also be used from a terminal when its command-line executable is installed:

rawtherapee-cli -o output.jpg -c input.erf

For multiple files, specify an output directory and process the source folder according to the RawTherapee version's command-line options; use the graphical interface if you need per-image exposure or white-balance adjustments.

Using darktable

1. Import the ERF file with Lighttable → Import.
2. Open it in Darkroom and make the required RAW adjustments.
3. Open Lighttable → Export, set File format to JPEG, choose a destination, and set the quality value.
4. Click Export.

Converting online

Do not use an online conversion for photographs containing sensitive information unless the service's retention and privacy terms are acceptable.

Quality and compatibility limitations

RAW software must support the specific Epson camera model; an unsupported ERF file may produce an error, incorrect colors, or an empty preview. Update RawTherapee or darktable before troubleshooting a file that will not open.

Set the output color space to sRGB for browsers, office software, and most consumer printing services. Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB can retain a wider editing gamut, but unsupported applications may display those files with dull or incorrect colors.

Keep the original ERF file if future exposure or white-balance changes may be needed. Exporting at a higher JPEG quality reduces compression artifacts but does not restore detail already lost during the camera's RAW-to-JPEG rendering.
