What the CR3 format is

CR3 is Canon's RAW image format, introduced with many newer EOS and PowerShot cameras. It stores sensor data rather than a finished, universally viewable picture and may use either lossless RAW or Canon's smaller C-RAW variant. Canon cameras create CR3 files when the camera is set to RAW or RAW+JPG. You commonly encounter them after copying photos from a memory card; Adobe Lightroom, Camera Raw, Canon Digital Photo Professional, Capture One, and current versions of darktable can develop them.

What the JPG format is

JPG is a widely supported, lossy image format intended for finished photographs. Browsers, phones, social networks, email clients, printers, and office software generally open JPG without a RAW decoder. Its smaller file size comes from compression, but repeated editing and resaving can reduce image quality. JPG is suitable when compatibility and compact files matter more than retaining the camera sensor data.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

• Conversion develops the RAW data; it does not merely rename the file. Exposure and white-balance changes must be made before export or in a RAW-capable editor.
• Use sRGB for websites, messaging, and general device compatibility. Adobe RGB or another wide-gamut profile can produce incorrect-looking colors in applications that ignore embedded profiles.
• Set JPEG quality around 85–95 for a practical balance between detail and size. Use maximum quality for further editing, and lower quality or reduced dimensions for web sharing.
• JPEG cannot preserve the full editing flexibility, sensor dynamic range, or lossless RAW data of the CR3. Keep the CR3 as the archival original and treat the JPG as an export copy.
• Some older software cannot decode CR3 files even when it supports earlier Canon RAW formats. Updating the RAW application or using Canon Digital Photo Professional may be required.
