Free online CR3 to PNG converter

CR3 photos often need conversion when an editor, website, operating system, or sharing workflow accepts PNG but cannot read Canon RAW files. PNG preserves lossless image data and is suitable for graphics, screenshots, transparent images, and further editing, although it usually produces a much larger file than JPEG.

What the CR3 format is

CR3 is Canon’s RAW image format, introduced with newer Canon cameras and based on the ISO Base Media File Format. It stores sensor data rather than a fully rendered image, along with metadata and often an embedded JPEG preview.

Canon EOS R-series mirrorless cameras and several later Canon models create .cr3 files. You encounter them after copying photographs from a camera card or importing them into Canon Digital Photo Professional, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable, or RawTherapee.

Because RAW data has not been permanently developed, exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, sharpening, noise reduction, and color rendering can be adjusted before exporting. A standard image viewer may show only the embedded preview or fail to open the file.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a rendered raster format that uses lossless compression. It supports RGB and RGBA color, so it can preserve transparency, and it is widely supported by browsers, image editors, document software, and graphics applications.

PNG is appropriate when you need lossless output, a transparent background, repeated editing without JPEG artifacts, or compatibility with software that does not support CR3. It is generally inefficient for ordinary camera photographs: a 16-bit PNG can be substantially larger than a high-quality JPEG, and PNG does not retain the original RAW adjustments or sensor data.

How to actually convert CR3 to PNG

Using 101convert online

1. Open the CR3-to-PNG converter on the 101convert.com website. The conversion is free and does not require installing software.
2. Upload the .cr3 file or select it with the file picker.
3. Choose PNG as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the resulting .png file when processing finishes.

Use this method for an occasional file or when no RAW-processing application is installed. Do not upload confidential or restricted photographs unless the service’s handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using darktable

1. Install a current version of darktable with CR3 support, then open the application.
2. Import the file through Lighttable → Import → Image.
3. Select the photograph and open it in the darkroom. Adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, color, and noise reduction as required.
4. Return to Lighttable, select the image, and open the export controls.
5. Set file format to PNG, choose an output folder, and set the bit depth and color profile if those controls are available.
6. Click Export. The rendered image is saved with a .png extension.

Using RawTherapee

1. Open the CR3 in RawTherapee and make the required RAW adjustments.
2. Send it to the processing queue using Save current image or the queue control.
3. In the save settings, select PNG, choose the output directory, and select 8-bit or 16-bit output.
4. Process the queue to create the PNG file.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Conversion is not a simple container rename: the CR3 sensor data must be demosaiced and rendered into pixels. The selected RAW decoder and processing settings determine the final brightness, colors, sharpening, noise, and dynamic range.

Use 16-bit PNG when the image will receive additional tonal or color editing; use 8-bit PNG for web graphics and ordinary compatibility. Preserve the original CR3 because PNG cannot store the full RAW editing latitude. If the output looks different between applications, check the chosen camera profile, white-balance method, exposure compensation, and embedded or assigned ICC color profile.

Some older applications cannot decode newer CR3 variants. Updating the RAW processor, Canon software, or camera support package may be necessary before conversion. PNG does not normally preserve Canon’s RAW metadata, lens corrections, or editable development settings in a form that another RAW application can continue to modify.
