How to convert orf to png file

A PNG copy is useful when software, a document workflow, or a device cannot open an Olympus RAW photograph. PNG also provides lossless output for editing and archiving, although JPEG is usually smaller for ordinary photo sharing.

What the ORF format is

ORF (Olympus Raw Image File) is the RAW format used by many Olympus and OM System digital cameras. It stores minimally processed sensor data rather than a finished bitmap, allowing compatible software to determine white balance, exposure, highlight recovery, demosaicing, and color rendering during development. ORF files can be opened with OM Workspace, darktable, RawTherapee, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, and GIMP when a compatible RAW importer is installed.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, and image editors. It preserves the exported pixel values through repeated saves, supports transparency, and avoids JPEG compression artifacts. PNG normally creates much larger files than JPEG and does not retain the editable sensor data in the ORF.

How to convert an ORF file to PNG

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the ORF-to-PNG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select the .orf file from your computer or device.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
  4. Download the resulting .png file.

This is suitable for occasional conversions when the converter's default rendering is acceptable. Check the PNG's dimensions, orientation, color, and file size before removing the original. Do not upload sensitive photographs unless the service's handling and retention terms are acceptable.

Using darktable

  1. Install darktable and open the ORF in the lighttable.
  2. Open the image in the darkroom and adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, lens correction, and color rendering as needed.
  3. Return to the lighttable, select the image, and open the export panel.
  4. Choose PNG as the file format, select the destination, and set the required image dimensions.
  5. Choose 16-bit output if further tonal or color editing is planned and the receiving software supports it; otherwise choose 8-bit output for general viewing and compatibility.
  6. Click export.

RawTherapee provides a similar local workflow: develop the ORF, select PNG in its save or processing-queue settings, and process the image. Local RAW developers provide more control than a converter that applies a fixed interpretation.

Using OM Workspace and an image editor

Open the ORF in OM Workspace, apply the required adjustments, and use its export command. OM Workspace versions commonly offer JPEG and TIFF, while PNG availability and menu names vary by release. If PNG is unavailable, export a high-quality TIFF and open it in an image editor such as GIMP, then use File → Export As and choose PNG.

Quality and compatibility caveats

ORF-to-PNG conversion is a RAW rendering step. The sensor data is demosaiced into ordinary pixels, so later PNG edits cannot recover highlight, shadow, or color information discarded during development. Keep the original ORF and retain darktable or RawTherapee sidecar settings when the conversion may need to be reproduced.

PNG does not normally preserve every camera-specific RAW field, and it is not a substitute for a RAW archive. Use an embedded or assigned color profile when the software offers that option, because untagged or differently interpreted profiles can change the displayed color. A 16-bit PNG preserves more tonal precision for continued editing; an 8-bit PNG is more widely accepted and is generally sufficient for viewing, documents, and web use. Choose JPEG instead when small files are the priority and some lossy compression is acceptable.
