Free online ORF to TIFF converter

Some editing, layout, printing, and archival applications cannot open Olympus RAW files and require a rendered TIFF instead. Converting an ORF develops the camera data into standard pixels, but the TIFF no longer retains the same RAW adjustment flexibility.

What the ORF format is

ORF (Olympus RAW Format) is a proprietary RAW format used by Olympus and OM SYSTEM digital cameras, including OM-D, PEN, and older Olympus E-series models. Cameras create ORF files when RAW or RAW+JPEG capture is selected.

An ORF usually contains minimally processed sensor data, camera metadata, a preview image, and manufacturer-specific processing information. RAW developers must interpret the camera model’s sensor data and apply demosaicing, white balance, exposure, and other corrections before producing viewable pixels. Compatible software includes OM Workspace, Adobe Lightroom and Camera Raw, darktable, and RawTherapee. Newer cameras may require an updated application or RAW decoder.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a tagged raster-image format used in photo editing, scanning, desktop publishing, printing, and archival workflows. It supports high bit depths, embedded color profiles, large image dimensions, and several compression methods.

A TIFF is suitable when an application does not support ORF or when you need a rendered image with more tonal information than an 8-bit JPEG. Select 16-bit TIFF for substantial color or exposure adjustments. LZW and ZIP compression reduce the file size without changing pixel data; TIFF files are still usually much larger than JPEG files and can be larger than the original ORF.

How to convert ORF to TIFF

For the best result, open the ORF in a RAW developer, adjust it, and export the rendered image. Use a local application for private or high-resolution photographs.

Using OM Workspace

1. Install a current OM Workspace version that supports the camera model, then open or import the ORF files.
2. Adjust exposure, white balance, highlights, shadows, noise reduction, sharpening, and lens corrections as required.
3. Use the application’s File → Export command or its equivalent export control.
4. Set the output format to TIFF. Select 16-bit when available.
5. Choose a color profile: sRGB for general compatibility, or Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB for a managed editing workflow with wider gamut requirements.
6. Select LZW or ZIP compression when available, choose the destination folder, and export. Select multiple images first to use batch export.

Using darktable

1. Import the ORF files into darktable and open them in the darkroom view.
2. Apply the required RAW adjustments, then select the finished images in lighttable.
3. In export selected, set file format to TIFF, choose 16 bit for bit depth, and select the required output color profile.
4. Choose a lossless compression option if available, set the output location, and click export.

Using RawTherapee

1. Open the ORF in RawTherapee’s file browser and make the required RAW adjustments in the editor.
2. Use Save current image, select TIFF as the output format, and choose 16-bit output when available.
3. Set the output color space and lossless compression if offered, then save the file.
4. For multiple images, add them to the processing queue and start the batch operation with the same processing profile.

Converting without installing software

You can convert an ORF file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the file, select TIFF as the output format, run the conversion, and download the result. Uploading sends the photograph to a third-party service, so use a local RAW application for confidential images or files that must remain offline.

Quality and compatibility limits

The conversion is a RAW development process, not a simple container change. The software must interpret the camera’s color-filter data and render pixels, so different applications, camera profiles, default white balances, and correction settings can produce visibly different TIFFs from the same ORF.

Choose 16-bit TIFF and a wide-gamut profile such as Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB when further editing is planned. Choose sRGB for applications, printers, or sharing systems that do not reliably manage embedded color profiles. Embed the selected profile so color-managed software can interpret the TIFF correctly.

TIFF can preserve the rendered pixels without JPEG-style lossy compression, but it does not preserve the original RAW controls for changing exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, or demosaicing later. Keep the original ORF and any sidecar files or catalog settings if future reprocessing may be needed. Check the exported TIFF at 100% magnification for clipped highlights, demosaicing artifacts, incorrect orientation, color-profile problems, and missing metadata.
