Free online PEF to TIFF converter

Pentax cameras save photographs as PEF raw files, while many editing, publishing, printing, and archival workflows require TIFF. Converting renders the sensor data into a widely supported image file; changing .pef to .tif does not perform the conversion.

What the PEF format is

PEF (Pentax Electronic File) is Pentax's proprietary camera raw format, used by many Pentax digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, including older *ist models. It stores minimally processed sensor data with exposure metadata, camera settings, and, on some models, an embedded JPEG preview.

A PEF is not a finished RGB photograph. A raw processor must demosaic the sensor data and interpret white balance, exposure, color, sharpening, noise reduction, and lens corrections before exporting an ordinary image. Compatible applications include Adobe Lightroom Classic, Adobe Camera Raw, darktable, RawTherapee, and Pentax Digital Camera Utility. Support can vary by camera model and software version.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a tagged raster format used in printing, scanning, desktop publishing, scientific imaging, and archival workflows. It supports 8-bit and higher bit depths, embedded ICC color profiles, metadata, and—depending on the application—layers or multiple pages.

TIFF can use uncompressed data or lossless LZW and ZIP compression, which reduce storage without discarding image pixels. It can also support lossy compression, so the selected options matter. TIFF is normally much larger than JPEG and is intended for editing, production, and preservation rather than casual web sharing.

How to convert the file

Using Lightroom Classic

1. Import the PEF file into Lightroom Classic and open it in the Develop module.
2. Adjust white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, lens corrections, noise reduction, and sharpening as required.
3. Select the photograph and choose File → Export.
4. Under file settings, choose TIFF, select 16 bits/component for continued editing, and choose an appropriate color space. ProPhoto RGB preserves a wide editing gamut; Adobe RGB suits many print workflows; use sRGB when the receiving system requires it.
5. Choose LZW or ZIP compression, select the destination folder, and click Export. Lightroom creates a .tif or .tiff file.

Using darktable or RawTherapee

1. Import the PEF into darktable or open it in RawTherapee, then apply the required raw-development adjustments.
2. Open the export or processing-queue settings and choose TIFF as the output format.
3. Set 16-bit integer output when further tonal or color editing is planned, select the required ICC output profile, and enable LZW or ZIP compression if the destination supports it.
4. Export or queue the file, then open the resulting TIFF in the intended editor or production system to verify its appearance and metadata.

Quality and compatibility limits

Raw conversion is an interpretation of sensor data, so different processors can produce different colors, detail, noise, and contrast from the same PEF. The TIFF does not retain the original raw flexibility: clipped highlights, an unsuitable white balance, aggressive noise reduction, or an 8-bit export cannot generally be reversed in the TIFF.

Use 16-bit TIFF for images that will receive additional exposure or color adjustments. Use 8-bit TIFF only when the destination requires it or the image is finished. Embed an ICC profile; an untagged TIFF can display with incorrect colors in color-managed applications.

Keep the original PEF with the exported TIFF for archival purposes. Confirm that the destination accepts the chosen bit depth, compression, alpha channel, layers, and multipage settings. Some older applications accept only uncompressed or 8-bit TIFF files, and TIFF support does not guarantee support for every camera-specific metadata field.
