Fujifilm cameras save photographs as RAF raw files, while many publishing, printing, scanning, and editing workflows require TIFF. Converting to TIFF creates a widely supported rendered image, but the original RAF must be retained if you may need to change raw-processing decisions later.

What the RAF format is

RAF is Fujifilm’s proprietary raw format, used by many X Series, GFX, and FinePix cameras. A RAF file contains minimally processed sensor data plus camera metadata and, depending on the model, a preview image. Raw-processing software must demosaic and interpret this data before producing a standard image.

Applications such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Capture One, darktable, and RawTherapee support RAF files, although support for newer Fujifilm models can vary by application version. Basic image viewers, office software, and some print or page-layout programs may not open RAF files directly.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF is a tagged raster-image format used for professional editing, scanning, print production, and archival workflows. It supports large dimensions, embedded ICC color profiles, metadata, and commonly used 8-bit and 16-bit-per-channel data.

LZW and ZIP compression are lossless, so they reduce storage without discarding image data. TIFF can also be uncompressed or use other compression types, including lossy JPEG compression; compatibility depends on the receiving application. TIFF files are normally much larger than JPEG files.

A 16-bit TIFF retains more tonal information for later adjustments than an 8-bit TIFF. It does not retain the original raw sensor data: exposure, white balance, demosaicing, noise reduction, sharpening, and color rendering are applied when the RAF is developed.

Quality and compatibility settings

Choose 16-bit TIFF when the image will receive substantial editing, tonal correction, or professional printing. Use 8-bit TIFF when the receiving application requires it or the image is already finished. Select sRGB for general sharing and applications with limited color management; use Adobe RGB or a wider-gamut workflow only when the entire editing and output chain supports it.

Embed the selected ICC profile so color-managed applications interpret the TIFF consistently. LZW and ZIP are suitable lossless choices, but some older applications accept only uncompressed or LZW-compressed TIFF files. If a recipient cannot open the file, retry with a different compression type, 8-bit data, or a simpler color mode such as RGB.

Conversion is a rendering step rather than a raw-file copy. Save the RAF alongside the TIFF because the TIFF cannot restore the camera’s original sensor data or provide the same unrestricted control over white balance, exposure, and demosaicing.
