Understanding RAF and PEF file formats

RAF is the proprietary raw image file format used by Fujifilm digital cameras. It stores unprocessed image data directly from the camera's sensor, allowing for extensive post-processing and high image quality. PEF stands for Pentax Electronic File, which is the raw image format used by Pentax digital cameras. Like RAF, PEF files contain minimally processed sensor data, enabling photographers to adjust exposure, white balance, and other settings after shooting.

Why convert RAF to PEF?

Converting RAF to PEF is uncommon, as both are raw formats tied to specific camera brands. However, you might need to convert RAF to PEF for compatibility with certain Pentax software or workflows that require PEF files. Note that converting between raw formats may result in loss of some proprietary metadata or features unique to each camera brand.

Best software for RAF to PEF conversion

Direct conversion from RAF to PEF is not widely supported, as most software focuses on converting raw files to standard formats like DNG (Digital Negative), TIFF, or JPEG. However, you can use Adobe DNG Converter to convert RAF files to the open DNG format, which is supported by many Pentax applications.
