How to convert raf to png file

Fujifilm camera photos often need conversion when an application or device accepts PNG but cannot open RAF files. PNG also provides a convenient rendered image for sharing, editing, or archiving, although it does not retain the original RAW editing flexibility.

What the RAF format is

RAF is Fujifilm’s proprietary RAW format, used by many Fujifilm digital cameras. A RAF file contains minimally processed sensor data along with camera metadata, so a RAW editor can adjust exposure, white balance, highlight recovery, color, and other parameters before producing a finished image.

RAF is not a standard bitmap such as PNG or JPEG. Support depends on the application and its camera-profile database; newer Fujifilm cameras may require an updated version of the software. RAF files should be retained as originals if further RAW editing may be needed.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format. Its compression does not discard pixels from the rendered image, and PNG supports RGB and RGBA color data, making it suitable for graphics that require transparency, screenshots, diagrams, and images that must avoid JPEG artifacts.

A converted photograph is a developed bitmap, not the original RAF sensor data. PNG preserves the exported pixels without lossy compression, but it cannot preserve the full range of RAW adjustments. PNG files are also commonly larger than JPEG files, especially for photographic images, and transparency is relevant only when the exported image contains an alpha channel.

How to convert RAF to PNG

  1. Open the RAF file in a RAW-capable application such as Adobe Lightroom Classic, Capture One, RawTherapee, or darktable.
  2. Adjust white balance, exposure, highlights, shadows, color, sharpening, and noise reduction as required. The software demosaics the sensor data and applies the selected camera profile during rendering.
  3. Choose File → Export or the application’s equivalent export command.
  4. Set the output format to PNG. Select 16-bit PNG when the software offers it and the image will receive further tonal editing; use 8-bit PNG for ordinary display or compatibility.
  5. Choose the output folder, set the filename pattern if needed, and export. Check the resulting file in a separate image viewer or editor.

For multiple files, use the application’s batch export or queue feature. Apply synchronized RAW adjustments first, then export the selected RAF files to PNG.

Using the built-in converter

You can convert a RAF file to PNG on 101convert.com for free without installing software. Select the RAF file, choose PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result when processing finishes.

An online conversion normally produces a rendered image using automatic or embedded processing rather than giving you the complete controls of a RAW editor. Inspect the output for color, orientation, exposure, and dimensions, and avoid uploading private photographs when the file’s contents or service-handling policy is unsuitable.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • PNG compression is lossless only after rendering: it prevents additional pixel loss but cannot restore clipped highlights, missing detail, or information discarded during RAW development.
  • Use a current application with the correct Fujifilm camera profile. Unsupported or newly released RAF variants may fail to open or may render with inaccurate color.
  • Embed an ICC color profile when exporting if the image will move between color-managed applications. Without a consistent profile, colors can appear different across software and devices.
  • PNG can store 16-bit color, but some viewers and editing programs support only 8-bit PNG or display it inconsistently. Convert to 8-bit when broad compatibility matters.
  • PNG is usually a poor size choice for final photographic delivery. JPEG is generally smaller, while TIFF may be more appropriate for high-bit-depth production workflows; keep the RAF as the editable camera original.
