How to convert pmd to png file

Source format: PMD

PMD is a file extension used by more than one application, but in conversion requests it most often refers to a page-layout or desktop publishing document created with Adobe PageMaker or a related publishing tool. These files can contain positioned text, images, and layout instructions for print-oriented documents such as brochures, flyers, newsletters, and simple publications.

Because PageMaker is an older format, PMD files are often converted when the original software is no longer available or when the document needs to be shared as a fixed visual image.

Target format: PNG

PNG is a lossless raster image format widely supported across operating systems, browsers, and image editors. It is commonly used for screenshots, graphics with sharp edges, logos, diagrams, and images that need transparency or exact visual fidelity.

PNG is a good target when you want to preserve the appearance of a PMD page as a single image. It is easy to view, embed, and share, and it does not introduce the compression artifacts associated with JPEG.

How to convert PMD to PNG

The best method depends on whether you can still open the PMD file in compatible software. Because PMD is an older publishing format, the most reliable workflow is usually to open the document in a compatible desktop application, export or print each page to PDF, and then convert that PDF to PNG.

  1. Try opening the PMD file in Adobe PageMaker if you have access to it. If the file opens correctly, use File → Export or File → Print to create a page-based output.
  2. Export to PDF if possible. PDF usually preserves layout better than direct image export and is often easier to convert cleanly to PNG.
  3. Convert the PDF pages to PNG using desktop software such as ImageMagick, GIMP, or Inkscape, depending on the document and your workflow.
  4. If you already have a PDF, a command-line conversion with ImageMagick may look like magick -density 300 input.pdf output.png. This creates a high-resolution PNG from the PDF page.
  5. If the PMD file can be opened only in PageMaker and not exported directly, use File → Print and choose a PDF printer, then convert the resulting PDF to PNG.
  6. You can also convert the file on 101convert.com for free, without installing any software, if the site supports your PMD file type and the document opens correctly in its converter.

Why not convert PMD directly to PNG?

Direct PMD-to-PNG support is uncommon because PMD is a layout document, not an image format. Most tools need to render the page first, which is why PDF is often used as an intermediate step. This approach usually gives better results and more predictable page rendering.

Quality and limitations

PMD to PNG is a one-way conversion from editable layout to a fixed image. Once converted, text is no longer editable as text, and vector elements become rasterized. This is ideal for previewing or sharing a final page image, but not for further document editing.

For best quality, use a high resolution during export or printing, typically 300 dpi or higher for print-oriented pages. Lower resolutions can make text and fine lines look blurry or jagged.

If the PMD document contains multiple pages, each page usually becomes a separate PNG file. Large or complex layouts may also lose some fidelity if fonts are missing, linked images are broken, or the original application cannot fully interpret the file.

Transparency is generally not a concern for page-layout documents, but PNG will preserve any transparent areas if the export workflow supports them. If exact print reproduction matters, PDF is often a better intermediate format than direct image export.

Tips for better results

  • Make sure you know which program created the PMD file, since some PMD files may belong to other applications.
  • Use the highest practical export resolution to keep text and line art sharp.
  • Check the output page by page if the document has multiple pages.
  • If fonts are missing, install them or substitute them before exporting to avoid layout shifts.
