How to convert pmd to jpeg file

A JPEG is useful when a PMD file must be viewed on a device without its original software, attached to an email, published on a website, or opened in ordinary image-editing software. The correct conversion method depends on whether the file comes from Adobe PageMaker or MikuMikuDance, because those applications use PMD for unrelated formats.

What the PMD format is

PMD most commonly identifies an Adobe PageMaker publication from PageMaker 6.x or 7.x. These files can contain text frames, linked graphics, master pages, columns, fonts, and print-layout settings. They are found mainly in older publishing archives, print shops, and legacy business documents. Adobe PageMaker is discontinued, so opening these files may require an existing installation or a compatible legacy environment.

PMD also identifies a MikuMikuDance model file. A MikuMikuDance PMD contains a polygon model, materials, bones, and related character data; it is not a document page or a ready-made image. Other applications may use the extension as well, so identify the originating program before choosing a converter.

What the JPEG format is

JPEG, usually stored with the .jpg or .jpeg extension, is a compressed raster-image format supported by browsers, phones, office software, and image editors. Its lossy compression produces relatively small files suitable for previews, web pages, email attachments, and single-page artwork.

JPEG stores a rendered picture, not the source structure. It does not preserve editable text, frames, vector objects, hyperlinks, animation, or multiple pages, and it does not support transparency in the broadly compatible way PNG does. A multi-page PageMaker publication normally becomes one JPEG per page.

How to convert a PageMaker PMD

Using the built-in converter

  1. Open the PMD-to-JPEG converter on 101convert.com. It can be used free without installing software.
  2. Upload the file and verify that the service identifies it as an Adobe PageMaker PMD rather than a MikuMikuDance model.
  3. Select JPEG as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting file or files. For a multi-page publication, check that every page has been rendered.

Do not upload confidential publications until the service's current file-handling and retention terms are acceptable for the material. A converter cannot restore fonts or linked graphics that are missing from the PMD.

Using PageMaker and a PDF rasterizer

  1. Open the PMD in Adobe PageMaker 6 or 7. Check preflight warnings, linked graphics, fonts, page size, and the intended page range.
  2. Export a PDF through File → Export → Adobe PDF, using a print-quality or press-quality setting when the output is intended for printing.
  3. Rasterize the PDF with Poppler's pdftoppm command:
pdftoppm -jpeg -r 300 input.pdf page

This produces files such as page-1.jpg and page-2.jpg. The -r 300 option renders at 300 DPI; use about 150 DPI for screen previews or 300–600 DPI for print-oriented images.

ImageMagick can perform the PDF step as well:

magick -density 300 input.pdf -quality 90 page-%03d.jpg

Some ImageMagick installations block PDF reading through their security policy. Poppler avoids that particular ImageMagick restriction; changing a security policy should be done only by an administrator who understands the risk of enabling PDF processing.

How to convert a MikuMikuDance PMD

A MikuMikuDance PMD cannot be converted directly to a meaningful JPEG without a scene, camera, lighting, and pose. Load the model in MikuMikuDance, add the required pose, camera, lighting, and background, then use its picture-rendering or image-saving command and choose JPEG if that version provides the option. The result is a rendered view of the model, not a conversion that preserves the PMD data.

For a 3D workflow, import the PMD into Blender with a compatible MikuMikuDance import add-on, configure the scene, select the camera and output resolution, set the output format to JPEG, and render a still image. Keep the PMD's texture files with the model during import; missing textures produce blank or incorrectly colored surfaces.

Quality and compatibility limits

For PageMaker files, exporting to PDF before rasterizing usually preserves page geometry and lets the publishing software resolve fonts and linked artwork before the image-rendering stage. A screenshot can include the wrong zoom level, window elements, or incomplete page content.

Render at least 300 DPI when small type must remain readable. JPEG quality around 90–95 limits visible compression while keeping files smaller than lossless images, but artifacts can appear around black text, thin rules, and other high-contrast edges. Use PNG instead when lossless text rendering or transparency is required.

Pixel dimensions depend on page size and resolution: a US Letter page at 300 DPI is 2550 × 3300 pixels, while an A4 page is approximately 2480 × 3508 pixels. Missing fonts, unavailable linked images, unsupported PageMaker features, incorrect color profiles, and RGB conversion can change the final appearance. JPEG is unsuitable as an archival replacement for the original PMD or PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PMD to JPEG converter free?

Yes, converting PMD to JPEG on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my PMD file be?

You can upload PMD files up to 25 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert PMD to JPEG?

No. The PMD to JPEG conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid PMD file for this PMD to JPEG conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Will my PageMaker layers and editable text be preserved when converting PMD to JPEG?

No. The PageMaker layout is rendered as a single flat JPEG image, so text, layers, vector objects, and other editable elements are no longer separate.

Can a MikuMikuDance PMD model be converted directly to JPEG?

A JPEG can show only a rendered view of the model, not the 3D model itself. Poses, animation, textures, lighting, and camera settings must be represented in the rendered image, while the model remains editable only in its original format.

Why does my PMD to JPEG conversion show only one page or view?

JPEG stores one still image, so a multi-page PageMaker document or an animated or multi-view model can produce only a single selected rendering. Other pages, frames, poses, or views are not included in that image.

Will the JPEG quality and colours match my PMD file?

The result depends on the source resolution and rendering settings, and JPEG compression can add artefacts around text, sharp edges, and fine details. Colour profiles and transparency may also be flattened or changed, and transparent areas generally need a solid background.
