Convert PMD to OBJ

3D models saved in PMD format can often be converted to the common Wavefront OBJ format (.obj) with software that can open the source file and export OBJ, or with a 3D modeling tool that supports both formats.

Supported pmd formats

PMD can refer to different 3D model formats, but the most common one in this context is:

• MikuMikuDance PMD files (.pmd)

Some older references may mention Poser, but Poser does not typically use .pmd as a standard model format. If your file is a MikuMikuDance PMD model, conversion to OBJ is often possible. If it comes from another application, check whether that program can export OBJ directly.

How to convert

Open the .pmd file in a compatible tool and use its export function to save it as OBJ. For example, in PmxEditor, support for opening or converting PMD files depends on the version and available plugins, so verify that your setup can actually export .obj before starting.

A typical workflow is:

1. Open the .pmd file in a compatible editor or converter.
2. Check whether the tool supports OBJ export.
3. Use File → Export or File → Save as and choose .obj.

Things to keep in mind

• Materials may export separately as .mtl files.
• Textures are usually referenced or copied, not embedded in OBJ.
• Rigging, bones, morphs, and animation are generally not preserved in OBJ, because OBJ is mainly a static mesh format.
• If the model uses Japanese text or special characters, make sure the converter handles file encoding correctly.
• If the source model has multiple materials or texture paths, you may need to fix links after export.

Alternative tools

Depending on the source PMD file, you may also be able to use other 3D tools or import/export plugins that support .pmd and .obj. If direct export is not available, a common workflow is to import the PMD file into a compatible editor and then export it as OBJ.

After conversion, you should have an .obj mesh file and, in many cases, a matching .mtl file plus texture images.
