Free online IFC to OBJ converter

A BIM coordinator may receive a building model as IFC while a renderer, game engine, mesh editor, or fabrication workflow accepts OBJ geometry. The conversion creates a polygonal copy for those tools, not an editable replacement for the BIM model.

What IFC is and who uses it

IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) is an open BIM data standard developed and maintained by buildingSMART. It describes building elements, including walls, slabs, doors, spaces, systems, materials, property sets, classifications, quantities, relationships, placements, and geometric representations.

Architects, structural engineers, MEP contractors, BIM coordinators, quantity surveyors, and facilities-management teams exchange IFC files between applications such as Revit, Archicad, Tekla Structures, Allplan, Vectorworks, Solibri, and BIM viewers. Common IFC deliveries use .ifc; XML-based .ifcxml and compressed .ifczip files also exist.

An .ifczip file may need to be extracted before conversion. Use the contained .ifc file unless the selected converter explicitly supports .ifczip.

What OBJ is and why it is used

OBJ is a text-based polygon mesh format originally developed for Wavefront software. It can store vertices, faces, normals, texture coordinates, object or group names, and references to materials.

Materials are normally written to a separate .mtl file, and textures remain separate image files. OBJ is widely accepted by mesh editors, renderers, 3D modeling software, game-development tools, and many 3D-printing workflows.

OBJ carries visible mesh geometry, not BIM intelligence. Walls, doors, spaces, classifications, schedules, quantities, property sets, parametric definitions, and IFC relationships do not survive as usable IFC data; an exported wall becomes polygons.

Convert an IFC file to OBJ

To convert without installing software, upload the .ifc file to 101convert.com, select OBJ as the output format, start the conversion, and download the result. If the download includes an .mtl file or texture images, keep them beside the .obj file when moving or opening the model.

For repeatable local conversion, use IfcConvert, distributed with IfcOpenShell. After installing a version that includes the command-line utility, run:

IfcConvert model.ifc model.obj

This reads model.ifc and writes an OBJ mesh. Check the output folder for a companion .mtl file and texture assets. Use local file paths with write permission, especially in batch jobs.

Use Blender when the mesh needs inspection, cleanup, material adjustment, decimation, or scale correction before delivery. Install the Bonsai IFC extension, formerly called BlenderBIM, import the IFC model through File → Import → Industry Foundation Classes (.ifc), inspect the model, then export through File → Export → Wavefront (.obj). Enable material export in the OBJ export settings when required, and keep the generated .obj, .mtl, and textures together.

Quality and compatibility limits

IFC can describe curves, swept solids, Boolean geometry, and parametric components; OBJ stores tessellated faces only. Pipes, curved façades, railings, and rounded structural members can appear faceted if exported with a coarse tessellation. Finer tessellation improves curvature but can create very large files and slow imports.

IFC material assignments, colors, transparency, and texture mappings do not always translate consistently to OBJ and MTL. Open the OBJ in the target application and verify material slots, face normals, missing textures, and transparency before sending it onward.

OBJ has no standardized unit system. IFC projects may use metres, millimetres, or other declared units, while an OBJ importer may assume a different scale. If the result is 1,000 times too large or small, set the target application's scene units or scale the mesh deliberately.

Large coordinate offsets in georeferenced IFC models can also reduce mesh precision in some graphics applications. Recenter a copy near the origin when necessary, while retaining the original IFC and its coordinates as the authoritative BIM source.

OBJ can retain basic object or group divisions but not the full IFC hierarchy or metadata. Remove unneeded disciplines, furniture, terrain, or highly repeated detail before export when the output is intended for real-time viewing or has strict file-size limits.
