A BIM viewer, project portal, or documentation workflow may require a lightweight WEBP preview instead of an editable IFC model. The conversion renders the IFC scene as a 2D image; it does not preserve the model’s geometry, layers, or BIM data.

What the IFC format is

IFC, or Industry Foundation Classes, is an open exchange format for building information models. It stores 3D elements such as walls, slabs, doors, windows, roofs, structural members, spaces, materials, properties, relationships, and geographic information.

Architectural and engineering applications including Autodesk Revit, Graphisoft Archicad, Tekla Structures, Allplan, Vectorworks, and other BIM programs create or export IFC files. You encounter IFC when exchanging a coordinated model between disciplines, reviewing a project in a neutral viewer, submitting model data, or archiving BIM information independently of one vendor’s native format.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format intended for web delivery and visual previews. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and relatively small files compared with many PNG or JPEG images at similar visual quality.

WEBP is useful for model thumbnails, browser-based documentation, issue screenshots, lightweight presentations, and portal previews. It contains only pixels, so it cannot be opened as a 3D model or used to recover IFC objects, measurements, properties, or camera-independent geometry.

How to convert IFC to WEBP

The conversion must render a selected IFC view into an image. A browser-based workflow is:

  1. Open the IFC-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .ifc file and choose WEBP as the output format.
  3. Start the conversion and wait for the IFC scene to be processed.
  4. Download the resulting .webp image.

Before converting, set the desired camera, visible categories, background, and image dimensions if the converter provides those controls. A perspective view is usually suitable for a presentation preview; an orthographic top, elevation, or section view is better for technical documentation.

For a local workflow, open the IFC in a BIM viewer or Blender with the Bonsai IFC add-on, position the camera, and render or export a PNG. Convert that raster image with ImageMagick:

magick rendered.png -quality 85 preview.webp

Use a lossless conversion when the image contains fine linework, labels, or flat-color diagrams:

magick rendered.png -define webp:lossless=true preview.webp

In a BIM application, the relevant command is typically File → Open/Import → IFC, followed by View → Render or File → Export Image. Exact menu names depend on the viewer and whether it exports rendered images directly.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

IFC-to-WEBP conversion is a 3D-to-2D rendering operation, not a structural format conversion. One WEBP represents one camera view; hidden objects, alternate floors, metadata, object relationships, and selectable geometry are not included.

Increase the output width and height before rendering if the image must show dimensions or small annotations. Lossy WEBP quality around 80–90 usually suits photographic model views, while lossless WEBP avoids compression artifacts around thin lines and text.

Transparent backgrounds may be lost if the renderer composites the scene onto a solid color. Some older BIM portals, CAD viewers, and document systems do not accept WEBP, so PNG or JPEG may be required for compatibility. Keep the original IFC alongside the WEBP whenever the recipient may need to inspect or edit the model.
