A 3D model must be rendered before it can be used as a WEBP image in a website, product listing, documentation page, or thumbnail. The conversion produces a 2D view of the OBJ, not another editable 3D model.

What the OBJ format is

OBJ is a text-based 3D geometry format that stores polygon vertices, texture coordinates, surface normals, and face definitions. Materials are usually stored in a separate .mtl file, which can reference image textures.

Modeling and visualization programs such as Blender, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, MeshLab, and CAD or scanning software can create or export OBJ files. You encounter OBJ when downloading a 3D asset, moving a model between applications, exporting a scan, or preparing geometry for a game or rendering workflow.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a 2D raster image format intended mainly for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation, although an OBJ conversion normally creates one still image.

WEBP is useful for model previews, catalog images, documentation, and browser-based interfaces because it often produces a smaller file than PNG or JPEG at comparable visual quality. It does not store vertices, faces, materials as editable 3D data, camera controls, or animation from the source model.

How to convert OBJ to WEBP

Using the online converter

  1. Open the OBJ-to-WEBP converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the .obj file. If the model uses a separate .mtl file or image textures, include those files when the converter permits multiple uploads; otherwise create a ZIP containing the OBJ, MTL, and referenced texture images.
  3. Choose WEBP as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the rendered WEBP file and inspect its framing, materials, transparency, and image dimensions.

This method requires no installed 3D application, but the available camera, lighting, background, and resolution controls depend on the converter.

Using Blender for control over the render

  1. Install Blender and open a new scene.
  2. Choose File → Import → Wavefront (.obj) and select the OBJ file. Keep the MTL file and texture images in their expected relative paths so Blender can load the materials.
  3. Select the imported object and use View → Frame Selected to inspect its scale and orientation. Add or position a camera and lights; a three-point light arrangement gives more readable form than an unlit scene.
  4. Set the render dimensions under Output Properties → Format. Use a square size such as 1200 × 1200 for a thumbnail, or choose dimensions matching the destination layout.
  5. Set Output Properties → Output → File Format to WebP. Choose lossy compression for smaller web files or lossless compression when fine texture detail must be preserved. Enable RGBA if the background must be transparent.
  6. Render with Render → Render Image, then save the result through Image → Save As, using a filename such as model.webp.

Quality and compatibility limitations

OBJ has no universal scene setup for the camera, lighting, background, or material interpretation, so two converters can produce different images from the same geometry. Missing MTL files, broken texture paths, unsupported material properties, reversed normals, and excessive polygon counts can cause blank, dark, untextured, or slow renders.

For a transparent product cutout, render with an alpha-enabled background and export RGBA WEBP; a solid background removes that flexibility. Lossy WEBP compression can blur small texture details and introduce artifacts around sharp edges, while lossless WEBP produces larger files. Keep the original OBJ and its companion assets when the model may need later editing.
