What the GLTF format is

glTF is an open 3D delivery format designed for real-time applications, web viewers, augmented reality, and game pipelines. A .gltf file usually references separate binary geometry and texture files; a .glb file packages most or all of the same data into one binary container.

The format can store meshes, materials, textures, cameras, lights, skinning, and animation. Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, game engines, and web frameworks such as Three.js can create or export glTF files. You commonly encounter it in downloaded 3D assets, product configurators, browser-based viewers, and AR content.

What the WEBP format is

WebP is a 2D image format suitable for web graphics and previews. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency through an alpha channel, and animation. Compared with PNG or JPEG, it can often produce a smaller image at comparable visual quality, although the result depends on the scene and export settings.

A WebP file cannot retain a glTF model's geometry, materials, animation, camera data, or interactive viewing. Use it when a single rendered view is sufficient. If you need the model to remain rotatable or editable, keep the original .gltf or .glb file.

How to actually convert GLTF to WEBP

Render it in Blender

1. Install Blender and open it.
2. Choose File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf), then select the model file. Keep referenced buffers and textures in their original relative locations when importing a .gltf package.
3. Position the imported model, camera, and lights. If the file has no suitable camera, select the object and use View → Align View → Align Active Camera to View after arranging the viewport, or create a camera and light manually.
4. Set the output dimensions in Output Properties → Format. Choose a color mode such as RGB for an opaque background or RGBA when the render needs transparency. Set the render engine under Render Properties; Eevee is generally faster, while Cycles can provide more physically accurate lighting.
5. Set Output Properties → Output → File Format to WebP. Select lossless compression for sharp interface-style graphics or a lossy quality setting for smaller photographic renders.
6. Render with Render → Render Image or press F12. In the Image Editor, choose Image → Save As, select the .webp extension and destination, then confirm the export.

Blender versions or builds without WebP output can render to PNG first, then convert that image with an image editor that supports WebP. This two-step process preserves the rendered appearance but cannot restore any 3D information.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Use a transparent background only when the renderer and viewer correctly preserve alpha. A transparent WebP may display with a different background in browsers or image applications. For thumbnails, render at the required final dimensions rather than enlarging a small WebP later. Preserve the glTF package separately if texture extraction, animation, or future editing may be needed.
