WRL is the file extension commonly used for VRML files, especially VRML 2.0 / VRML97. It is an older 3D scene format used for exchanging interactive 3D content, especially in legacy CAD, visualization, and web-based 3D workflows. WRL can store geometry, colors, textures, transforms, and simple scene structure.

The main advantages of WRL are its long-standing compatibility with older 3D software and its human-readable text form in many cases. However, compared with glTF, it is less efficient, less modern, and has weaker support for physically based materials and advanced animation.

How to perform the conversion

The most practical way to convert glTF to WRL is with Blender, which can import glTF and export VRML/WRL in many installations or via add-ons depending on version.

1. Open Blender.
2. Import the glTF model using File → Import → glTF 2.0.
3. Check the model scale, orientation, materials, and textures. glTF commonly uses a different axis and unit setup than older formats.
4. Export the scene as WRL using File → Export → X3D Extensible 3D or a VRML/WRL export option if available in your Blender version or add-ons. In some workflows, X3D export is used as an intermediate step because it is closely related to VRML.
5. Save the output as .wrl.

If your Blender build does not provide a direct WRL exporter, use a workflow that exports to X3D first and then converts to WRL with compatible desktop tools. This is often the most reliable route for preserving scene structure.

Notes on quality and compatibility

Material conversion is the main limitation in this workflow. glTF uses modern PBR materials, while WRL/VRML supports a much simpler shading model. As a result, metallic/roughness appearance, image-based lighting, and some texture effects may not transfer accurately.

Animations, cameras, and scene extras may also be partially lost or simplified, depending on the exporter. Mesh geometry usually converts well, but complex node hierarchies, skinning, morph targets, and advanced glTF features may not be fully preserved.

For best results, use a glTF file with standard meshes and basic textures, and verify the WRL output in a compatible viewer after conversion. If the goal is long-term interchange or modern 3D delivery, glTF is usually the better target to keep; WRL is mainly useful when a legacy application specifically requires it.
