How to convert gltf to 3ds file

Older CAD, visualization, and game-development programs may accept only the legacy 3D Studio format, so a GLTF or GLB asset must be saved as .3ds before import. The conversion also provides a compact file for sharing with software that cannot read GLTF.

What the GLTF format is

GLTF (GL Transmission Format) is an open Khronos Group format for delivering 3D scenes to browsers, game engines, AR applications, asset libraries, and real-time viewers. A scene can include meshes, node hierarchies, cameras, lights, animations, PBR materials, and textures.

A .gltf file is usually JSON that references a separate .bin buffer and image files. A .glb file is the binary form and normally packages the scene, geometry, and images into one file. Blender, 3ds Max, Maya, game engines, web viewers, and CAD-to-web tools commonly support these formats.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is the binary scene format associated with Autodesk 3D Studio and 3D Studio Max. Its compact structure and broad support in older modeling, rendering, CAD, and visualization software remain its main advantages.

3DS can contain polygon meshes, basic materials, texture references, cameras, lights, and limited animation chunks, but it does not reliably preserve modern GLTF features such as metallic-roughness shading, clearcoat, transmission, node-based materials, morph targets, skinning, or complex scene hierarchies.

How to convert the file on 101convert.com

  1. Open the GLTF-to-3DS converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Upload the source .gltf or .glb file. For a .gltf source, include its referenced .bin and image files if the converter accepts a file set or archive; otherwise, the geometry or textures may be incomplete.
  3. Choose 3DS as the output format and start the conversion.
  4. Download the resulting .3ds file and open it in the application that will use it.
  5. Check the model's scale, orientation, object names, materials, normals, and textures before replacing the original asset.

The conversion is available without installing desktop software. Do not upload confidential or restricted assets to any web-based converter.

Conversion with Blender

Blender is useful when the model needs inspection, mesh reduction, scale correction, object cleanup, or texture relinking before export. Its 3DS support is commonly supplied as a bundled add-on or extension and may not be enabled in every release.

  1. Enable the 3DS add-on or extension in Blender's preferences if File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds) is unavailable.
  2. Import the source with File → Import → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf). Keep all external .bin and image files in their expected relative paths.
  3. Inspect the scene, remove unwanted objects, correct orientation and units, and reduce dense meshes with a Decimate modifier when required.
  4. Export with File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds). Use selection-only export when appropriate and set the exporter axes to match the receiving application.
  5. Open the exported file in the destination program and repair texture paths or materials if necessary.

Conversion with Assimp

Assimp's command-line tools can perform a direct conversion when no scene editing is needed:

assimp export model.gltf model.3ds
assimp export model.glb model.3ds

Install a build that includes the Assimp command-line executable, and keep all resources referenced by a separate .gltf file available at their original relative paths. Inspect the output afterward because direct conversion may discard materials, animation, transforms, or unsupported scene data.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Materials are simplified: metallic-roughness, clearcoat, transmission, emissive, normal, and occlusion properties may become basic 3DS material settings. Recreate complex shaders in the destination application.
  • Textures may need relinking: 3DS commonly stores image filenames or paths rather than packaging every image. Keep the exported model and image files together and relink missing textures in the target software.
  • Meshes may need splitting: classic 3DS mesh structures use 16-bit indices, so exporters may split meshes that exceed roughly 65,535 vertices or otherwise exceed an individual mesh chunk's limits.
  • Names can be truncated: many 3DS implementations limit object and material names to 10 characters. Rename important objects before export when stable names matter.
  • Animation and hierarchy are unreliable: skinning, constraints, cameras, lights, instancing, node relationships, and animation tracks may be lost. Export only the geometry and basic materials required by the receiving program.
  • Scale is ambiguous: GLTF conventionally uses meters, while 3DS does not enforce one universal unit interpretation. Measure a known object after import and correct the scale in the destination application.
