Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A WEBP file contains a 2D raster image, while a 3DS file contains 3D geometry, so this is not a direct format swap. To use the image in a 3D application that requires 3DS, place it on a model or plane, convert the texture to a widely supported image format, and export the resulting scene as 3DS.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed for web delivery. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation; browsers, CMS platforms, screenshot tools, and image editors commonly create or save it. In 3D work, WEBP may be used as a reference image, decal, or material texture, but it contains no vertices, faces, UV coordinates, camera, or lighting data.

What the 3DS format is

3DS is the legacy Autodesk 3D Studio scene format. It can store polygon meshes, object transforms, basic materials, UV mapping, cameras, and lights, and remains useful when an older modeling, visualization, or conversion program specifically requires .3ds. Its limits include small legacy index fields, restricted material data, and unreliable support for modern shaders, modifiers, animation systems, and embedded textures.

How to convert WEBP to 3DS

Using Blender

  1. Open the WEBP in an image editor and save a copy as texture.png or texture.jpg. PNG preserves transparency; JPEG does not.
  2. In Blender, create the geometry that should carry the image, such as a plane, or open an existing model.
  3. Use UV Editing → UV → Unwrap to assign texture coordinates. A plane can use the default full-image UV layout.
  4. In the Shading workspace, create an Image Texture node, open texture.png or texture.jpg, and connect its Color output to the material’s Base Color. Connect its Alpha output to the shader’s Alpha only when transparency is required, then configure the material’s blend mode accordingly.
  5. Enable Blender’s included 3D Studio import/export add-on through Edit → Preferences → Add-ons; search for 3D Studio and enable the exporter if it is not already active.
  6. Select the required objects and choose File → Export → 3D Studio (.3ds). Enable selection-only export when the file must contain only the textured model, then save it as model.3ds.
  7. Keep model.3ds and the texture in the same folder, using a short filename such as texture.png. Open the exported file in the target application and relink the bitmap if the material appears untextured.

Using Autodesk 3ds Max

  1. Convert the WEBP to PNG or JPEG and save it beside the future 3DS file.
  2. Create a plane or import the intended mesh, then apply a material through Material Editor → Base Color → Bitmap and select the converted texture.
  3. Assign UV coordinates with Modifier List → UVW Map or an Unwrap UVW modifier.
  4. Use File → Export → Export Selected, choose 3D Studio (*.3DS), and review the export options for texture paths, smoothing groups, and material export.
  5. Copy the texture with the .3ds file and verify the result in the receiving program.

For a no-install attempt, the free converter on 101convert.com can be used, but a service cannot infer meaningful 3D geometry from a flat image. A useful result requires a model or a generated flat surface, and texture compatibility may still require manual correction.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The conversion does not create depth, a relief, or a watertight 3D object from image pixels. A plane textured with the WEBP has only two-dimensional geometry; creating a genuine object requires modeling, image-based displacement, photogrammetry, or another 3D reconstruction workflow.

Convert WEBP to PNG when transparency or lossless texture detail matters. Use JPEG only for opaque photographic textures, and choose its quality before export because 3DS does not restore compression artifacts. The 3DS format usually stores a reference to the bitmap rather than reliably embedding it, so moving or renaming the texture can break the material. Keep texture paths short and use ASCII filenames for older software.

Exported materials may lose node-based effects, normal maps, roughness maps, physically based settings, and transparency behavior. Apply transforms, triangulate if the receiving application requires predictable faces, and check polygon counts because legacy 3DS implementations may reject or split large meshes.
