Free online WEBP to X3D converter

A WEBP image cannot become 3D geometry by format conversion alone. The practical reason to place it in an X3D file is to display the image as a texture on a plane in an X3D viewer or interactive scene.

What the WEBP format is

WEBP is a raster image format developed by Google and commonly produced by web browsers, content-management systems, image editors, screenshot tools, and 3D applications exporting texture maps. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, and animation. In 3D work, a WEBP file is normally an image texture, reference image, decal, or preview rather than a model.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an ISO-standard scene-description format for 3D geometry, materials, lights, cameras, animation, and interaction. Its XML encoding uses elements such as Shape, Appearance, ImageTexture, and Transform; binary and compressed X3D encodings also exist. X3D is useful for exchanging interactive scenes with compatible viewers, browsers, simulation software, and visualization tools. It can reference an external image texture, but it does not turn a flat image into a mesh, depth map, or volumetric model.

How to actually convert WEBP to X3D

For a textured 2D result, first convert the WEBP to PNG for broader X3D viewer compatibility. ImageMagick performs this conversion with:

Create a file named image-plane.x3d containing the following scene. The example uses a two-unit-wide plane with a one-unit height; change the size values to match the image aspect ratio.

Keep image-plane.x3d and texture.png in the same directory, then open the X3D file in an X3D viewer or import it into software that supports the X3D XML encoding. The ImageTexture URL is relative to the X3D file, so moving only the X3D file will break the texture reference.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Lossy WEBP artifacts remain visible on the texture after conversion; changing the container to X3D does not restore lost detail. Preserve transparency when converting by using a format such as PNG with an alpha channel.

Some X3D viewers and older importers do not decode WEBP URLs even when the host system does. PNG or JPEG provides more predictable ImageTexture compatibility. X3D generally references textures rather than embedding them, so distribute the image alongside the scene or use a deployment method that preserves relative paths. The result remains a flat, textured rectangle unless separate 3D geometry is created.
