Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A GIF is a 2D raster image, while X3D is a 3D scene format, so this conversion is usually needed to place a GIF on a surface in an X3D scene. The result is a textured rectangle rather than automatically generated 3D geometry.

What the GIF format is

GIF is a bitmap format that stores images with up to 256 colors per frame, optional transparency, and optional frame-based animation. Image editors, web browsers, screen-capture tools, and graphics utilities commonly create or open .gif files.

For this conversion, a GIF normally supplies the texture image for a plane, billboard, sign, label, or other flat object. An animated GIF contains multiple frames; it is not inherently a 3D model and cannot provide depth, surface topology, or material properties.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an XML-based scene description format for 3D geometry, transformations, cameras, lights, materials, textures, and animation. X3D scenes can be viewed by compatible browsers, authoring tools, and 3D applications.

An X3D file can reference a GIF or another image as an ImageTexture, but converting the image to PNG is safer because X3D viewers differ in GIF and animated-image support. The useful X3D result is typically a scene containing an IndexedFaceSet or plane with an image texture.

How to actually convert GIF to X3D

Create a textured X3D plane with Python

This method preserves the GIF's first frame and creates a correctly proportioned rectangular surface. Install Pillow, save the following as gif_to_x3d.py, and place it beside input.gif:

from PIL import Image
from pathlib import Path

src = Path("input.gif")
out_image = Path("gif-frame.png")
out_x3d = Path("output.x3d")

image = Image.open(src)
image.seek(0)
image.convert("RGBA").save(out_image)
w, h = image.size
half_w, half_h = w / 2, h / 2

x3d = f'''<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<X3D profile="Immersive" version="3.3">
  <Scene>
    <Shape>
      <Appearance>
        <ImageTexture url='"gif-frame.png"'/>
      </Appearance>
      <IndexedFaceSet coordIndex="0 1 2 3 -1" texCoordIndex="0 1 2 3 -1">
        <Coordinate point="{-half_w} {-half_h} 0, {half_w} {-half_h} 0, {half_w} {half_h} 0, {-half_w} {half_h} 0"/>
        <TextureCoordinate point="0 0, 1 0, 1 1, 0 1"/>
      </IndexedFaceSet>
    </Shape>
  </Scene>
</X3D>'''
out_x3d.write_text(x3d, encoding="utf-8")
print(f"Created {out_x3d} and {out_image}")

Run it with python gif_to_x3d.py. Keep output.x3d and gif-frame.png in the same directory because the X3D file uses a relative texture URL. Open output.x3d in an X3D-capable viewer and adjust the scene scale or add a camera and lighting nodes if required by the viewer.

Use a desktop 3D application

In a 3D editor that supports X3D export, create a plane, assign the GIF or a PNG copy as its image texture, apply the material, and choose File → Export → X3D. If the exporter does not support GIF textures reliably, convert the image first and use gif-frame.png. The exact menu names and X3D export support depend on the application and version.

Convert online

You can try the free converter on 101convert.com without installing software. Because GIF-to-X3D requires a decision about whether the image becomes a texture, a plane, or extracted geometry, verify the generated scene and texture path after downloading it.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The Python method uses only the first GIF frame. To represent animation, export every frame as a numbered PNG sequence and build X3D time-dependent nodes such as TimeSensor, CoordinateInterpolator, or a viewer-supported texture animation; simply renaming or embedding an animated GIF does not guarantee playback.

The output contains no automatically inferred 3D shape. A height map, segmentation mask, or photogrammetry workflow is required to derive geometry, and a single flat GIF generally does not contain enough information for accurate depth reconstruction.

PNG avoids GIF's 256-color palette and has more predictable alpha-channel behavior. Use power-of-two dimensions only when targeting older real-time viewers, and keep texture URLs relative and case-correct because X3D applications may resolve paths differently.
