Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

Programs that support X3D may require a scene description rather than a standalone bitmap. Converting a BMP therefore usually means using it as a texture or grayscale height map, then exporting the resulting 3D scene as X3D.

What the BMP format is

BMP is a raster image format that stores pixels, commonly with 24-bit or 32-bit color and little or no compression. Windows Paint, older CAD and 3D applications, scanners, and image editors can create BMP files; they are often encountered as texture artwork, reference images, or grayscale elevation maps.

A BMP contains 2D pixel data only. It does not contain vertices, faces, UV coordinates, materials, or camera information, so it cannot become a complete 3D model through a direct format rewrite.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an XML-based scene format for interactive 3D content. It can describe polygonal geometry, transformations, lights, cameras, materials, animations, and image textures for X3D viewers and compatible 3D applications.

X3D is useful when a scene must be exchanged as structured text, embedded in a web-oriented workflow, or archived with its geometry and scene properties. An X3D file can reference a bitmap as an image texture, but viewer compatibility is generally better with PNG or JPEG than with BMP.

How to actually convert BMP to X3D

Use the BMP as a surface texture in Blender

  1. Open Blender and create or import the 3D object that should display the image.
  2. Assign a material in the Shading workspace, add an Image Texture node, and open the .bmp file.
  3. Connect the image color to the material’s Base Color input, then create or adjust UV coordinates so the image maps correctly.
  4. Save the scene, then choose File → Export → X3D Extensible 3D and select the output location.
  5. Check the exported .x3d file and any accompanying texture files in an X3D viewer. Keep referenced images beside the X3D file unless the exporter embeds them.

For better viewer compatibility, convert the BMP to .png first with an image editor, then use the PNG in the material. Preserve the original BMP separately if exact source data is required.

Use a grayscale BMP as a height map

  1. Prepare a grayscale BMP where black represents the lowest elevation and white the highest. Remove unintended borders and keep the image resolution appropriate for the required mesh density.
  2. In Blender, add a sufficiently subdivided plane or grid.
  3. Use the BMP in a Displace modifier or displacement node, set the displacement strength and midlevel, and apply the modifier when the surface shape is correct.
  4. Inspect the mesh for excessive stretching or visible stair-stepping, add subdivision if necessary, and export through File → Export → X3D Extensible 3D.

This produces geometry derived from brightness values; it does not recover hidden 3D structure, overhangs, or a real object from an ordinary color photograph.

Use the online converter

You can convert the file for free on 101convert.com without installing software. Since a BMP has no inherent 3D geometry, inspect the service’s options and output: a valid X3D result may contain a textured plane, a height-map mesh, or a scene that references the source image rather than a reconstructed model.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

The chosen interpretation determines the result. Texture conversion preserves pixels on a surface but creates no new shape; height-map conversion creates terrain-like relief but loses color-based depth cues and cannot represent enclosed or vertical geometry.

Exported X3D files may reference external images using relative URLs. Move the X3D file and its texture directory together, or edit the ImageTexture URL and use a format supported by the target viewer. Large BMP dimensions can produce unnecessarily heavy textures or dense height-map meshes, while low-resolution images cause blurred textures and stepped relief.
