Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TGA file is a 2D raster image, while X3D is a structured 3D scene format. Conversion is needed when an X3D viewer or modeling workflow requires the TGA image as a texture on 3D geometry; converting the image alone cannot create a meaningful 3D model.

What the TGA format is

TGA (Truevision TGA) stores raster images used for textures, sprites, masks, normal-map components, and rendered frames. It supports uncompressed and run-length encoded data, commonly with 24-bit RGB or 32-bit RGBA color and an optional alpha channel.

3D applications and game tools often create or consume TGA files, including Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, game engines, and texture-painting software. You may encounter TGA files in legacy game assets, archival render output, and pipelines that preserve transparency or precise color data.

What the X3D format is

X3D is an XML-based format for describing interactive 3D scenes. It can contain geometry, materials, lights, cameras, animations, viewpoints, and references to external image textures such as TGA, PNG, or JPEG files.

An X3D scene can be opened by compatible viewers, imported into some 3D tools, or embedded in applications that support the X3D or Web3D standards. Unlike TGA, X3D does not primarily store pixels; it describes objects and their relationships.

How to actually convert TGA to X3D

Use Blender when the TGA is intended to become a texture on a model:

  1. Install Blender and enable its X3D exporter under Edit → Preferences → Add-ons if the exporter is not already available.
  2. Open or create the 3D model that should use the image. A TGA by itself supplies no vertices, faces, camera, or lighting.
  3. In the Shading workspace, create an Image Texture node, choose your-image.tga, and connect its Color output to the material's Base Color. Connect its Alpha output to the material alpha input when the TGA contains transparency, then set the material blend mode as required.
  4. Unwrap the model so its UV coordinates place the correct parts of the TGA on each surface.
  5. Save the scene, keep the TGA in the intended relative folder, and choose File → Export → X3D Extensible 3D (.x3d/.x3dv). Enable texture-related export options when available.
  6. Open the resulting scene.x3d in an X3D viewer and verify that the referenced TGA remains accessible. For a self-contained delivery, use a tool that supports embedding or convert the texture to a format accepted by the target viewer.

If you only need to place a flat image in a 3D scene, create a plane or rectangle, apply the TGA to it, and export that scene as X3D. You can also submit the file to 101convert.com for free without installing software, but an automated converter cannot infer 3D geometry from image pixels; the result is useful only if the service explicitly creates a textured scene or plane.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

Texture resolution and alpha data can be preserved when the X3D file references the original TGA, but the X3D file may not contain the image itself. Move the texture together with the X3D file or use relative paths that remain valid on the destination system.

Some X3D viewers do not support TGA textures, unusual TGA origin flags, or all alpha modes. Convert the texture to PNG when compatibility is more important than retaining TGA, then update the material reference before export.

A TGA photograph, render, or texture cannot become a true 3D mesh through format conversion. Creating geometry from an image requires a separate modeling, photogrammetry, height-map, or image-to-mesh workflow before exporting the resulting scene to X3D.
