Model type

A relief raises the bright parts of the picture above a base plate: terrain, embossed logos, signs. A lithophane is a thin plate that is thicker where the picture is dark, so the photo appears when light shines through it. Print it in white filament.

Model size (longest side)

Height

Relief: how far the brightest parts rise above the base plate. Lithophane: the thickest point of the plate (the thinnest is 0.8 mm). Auto uses 5 mm for a relief and 3 mm for a lithophane.

Mesh detail

More detail keeps finer features of the picture, but the file gets bigger and slower to slice.

Swaps high and low, for example to raise a dark logo on a white background.

A TGA file is usually a texture, while GLB is a complete 3D scene container. Converting one into the other requires a mesh to receive the texture; an image alone cannot provide real 3D geometry unless the result is simply a textured plane.

What the TGA format is

TGA (Truevision TGA) is a raster image format used in 3D production for diffuse or base-color textures, decals, masks, normal maps, and images with an alpha channel. It supports uncompressed and run-length encoded data, commonly at 24-bit or 32-bit color depth.

3D applications and game tools such as Blender, Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, and older game engines can create or read TGA files. You typically encounter TGA assets in texture folders exported from modeling software or extracted from game-development projects.

What the GLB format is

GLB is the binary form of the glTF 2.0 format. One file can contain meshes, materials, UV coordinates, animations, cameras, and embedded texture images, making it suitable for WebGL viewers, game engines, augmented-reality applications, and 3D asset exchange.

Unlike TGA, GLB is not an image format. A GLB file must contain a scene or object, so a TGA cannot become a meaningful 3D model without geometry. GLB commonly embeds textures and avoids the missing-image problems caused by distributing a glTF file alongside separate image files.

How to actually convert TGA to GLB

Using Blender with an existing 3D model

  1. Open Blender and import the mesh through File → Import. Use the appropriate importer for the source format, such as OBJ, FBX, or glTF.
  2. Select the mesh and open the Shading workspace. Create or select its material, add an Image Texture node, and open the TGA file.
  3. Connect the image to the material’s Base Color input. For a normal, roughness, metallic, or mask texture, set the image node’s color space to Non-Color; leave a color texture as sRGB.
  4. Confirm that the mesh has UV coordinates. Without suitable UV mapping, the TGA will not appear correctly on the surface.
  5. For maximum viewer compatibility, convert the texture to PNG in Blender’s Image Editor through Image → Save As, then replace the TGA image in the material. PNG preserves transparency; JPEG does not.
  6. Export through File → Export → glTF 2.0. Set the format to GLB, choose the required object scope, and export. The exporter embeds the material and supported texture images in the resulting file.

Creating a GLB from the TGA alone

In Blender, add a plane through Add → Mesh → Plane, create a material, and assign the TGA as its base-color image. UV-map the plane, optionally enable alpha blending in the material settings, and export it as GLB through File → Export → glTF 2.0 with GLB selected. The output is a flat textured surface rather than a modeled object.

Quality, compatibility, and limitations

  • Texture resolution and compression affect the GLB’s size and appearance, but they do not add geometric detail. Use a suitable PNG resolution before export.
  • TGA alpha can be retained, but transparent materials may require an appropriate blend mode in the target viewer. glTF commonly uses opaque, mask, or blend alpha behavior.
  • Normal maps must use the correct tangent-space format and Non-Color interpretation. Connecting a normal image directly to base color produces incorrect shading.
  • Some GLB viewers support only a subset of material features. Test the exported file in the intended browser, engine, or model viewer.
  • If the original TGA is a normal map, roughness map, or mask rather than a color texture, identify its intended material input before export; otherwise the conversion may preserve the pixels but produce the wrong visual result.
