Free online TGA to GIF converter

A TGA image may need conversion when a browser, messaging app, or graphics workflow accepts GIF but not TGA. GIF also provides a compact indexed-color format and optional animation for simple artwork and short frame sequences.

What the TGA format is

TGA, or Truevision TGA, is a raster image format created by Truevision. It is used for game textures and sprites, 3D renders, video frames, screenshots, and other production assets. TGA can store grayscale, color-mapped, or RGB images at common depths of 8, 16, 24, and 32 bits per pixel; 32-bit files commonly contain an 8-bit alpha channel. Files may use uncompressed or run-length encoded data and normally have the .tga extension.

What the GIF format is

GIF is an indexed-color raster format. Each frame can contain at most 256 colors, uses lossless LZW compression, and can include one transparent palette entry. It does not support continuous alpha transparency, so partially transparent pixels must be approximated as opaque or transparent. GIF is suitable for icons, diagrams, flat-color artwork, and short animations with broad browser and software compatibility; it is usually inefficient for photographs and detailed gradients.

How to convert a TGA file to GIF

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the TGA-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com; it can be used free without installing software.
2. Select or upload the .tga file.
3. Choose GIF as the output format and start the conversion.
4. Download the .gif file, then check its dimensions, colors, and transparency in an image viewer or browser.

Uploading sends the source file to a web service, so use a desktop application instead for confidential or production assets when the service's file-handling terms are unsuitable.

Using GIMP

1. Open the TGA file through File → Open.
2. For one image, choose File → Export As, enter a name ending in .gif, and select Export.
3. In the GIF export dialog, enable interlacing only if progressive display is needed; GIF automatically converts the image to an indexed palette.
4. For better control, first choose Image → Mode → Indexed, select a palette size up to 256 colors, and choose whether to dither before exporting.

To make an animation from separate TGA frames, open them as layers through File → Open as Layers, keeping the layers in display order. Export the layered image as GIF, enable As animation, set the frame delay in milliseconds, and choose whether the animation should loop.

Using ImageMagick

Convert one file from a terminal with:

magick input.tga output.gif

To explicitly limit the palette and apply Floyd–Steinberg dithering, use:

magick input.tga -colors 256 -dither FloydSteinberg output.gif

Dithering can make gradients appear smoother but adds patterned pixels. For a flat graphic, omitting dithering may produce cleaner areas and more visible color banding.

For sequentially named frames such as frame001.tga, frame002.tga, and frame003.tga, use:

magick -delay 10 -loop 0 frame*.tga animation.gif

-delay 10 specifies 10 hundredths of a second, or 0.1 seconds, between frames; -loop 0 repeats the animation indefinitely. Use zero-padded filenames or another explicit file list so the shell passes frames in the intended order.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion reduces every frame to a maximum 256-color palette. Colors outside that palette are replaced with approximations, and dithering trades smooth color areas for patterned pixels. GIF is therefore a poor target for photographs, large textures, and artwork with many subtle gradients; PNG is generally better for those cases.

TGA alpha is also reduced from potentially many opacity levels to GIF's single transparent palette entry. Semi-transparent antialiased edges can become jagged or show a fringe from the original matte color. Composite the image against its intended background before conversion, or remove the alpha channel and choose a suitable matte color.

A single TGA produces one GIF frame. Multiple TGA files become an animation only when an application is given an ordered sequence or when separate source layers are exported with animation enabled. GIF animation can also produce large files when frames are numerous, high-resolution, or visually complex.
