A website, chat application, or older graphics program may require GIF when it cannot open TIFF. Conversion can also reduce file size for icons, diagrams, and other limited-color graphics, but GIF is generally unsuitable for photographs and high-color artwork.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a raster format used for scanning, printing, publishing, photography, professional editing, and archival storage. A TIFF can contain lossless or lossy compression, extensive metadata, high color depth, transparency, and multiple pages. Scanners, Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo, GIMP, and desktop-publishing applications commonly create .tif and .tiff files. TIFF supports more image data than GIF, but files are often larger and are not universally supported by browsers or lightweight applications.

What the GIF format is

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) stores each frame with a palette of up to 256 colors. LZW compression is lossless for the indexed image data, but converting a full-color TIFF requires color reduction and can cause dithering, banding, or inaccurate colors. GIF supports one-bit transparency—one palette entry can be transparent—and multiple frames, so it suits icons, diagrams, limited-color screenshots, and short silent animations. Browsers and common image viewers support it widely.

How to convert a TIFF file

Using 101convert.com

1. Open the TIFF-to-GIF converter on 101convert.com.
2. Select or drag a file ending in .tif or .tiff into the upload area.
3. Start the conversion and wait for processing to finish.
4. Download the .gif file, then open it in a browser or image viewer to check its colors, dimensions, and transparency.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is suitable for repeatable desktop or command-line conversions. A basic conversion is:

To explicitly quantize the image to GIF’s maximum palette and apply ordered color dithering, use:

magick input.tiff -colors 256 -dither Riemersma output.gif

Dithering can make gradients appear smoother but does not restore colors lost during quantization. For a multipage TIFF, export one page with an index such as:

magick input.tiff[0] page-1.gif

Replace [0] with [1], [2], and so on for later pages. To turn all pages into animation frames, use:

magick -delay 10 -loop 0 input.tiff animated.gif

Here, -delay 10 sets the frame delay in hundredths of a second and -loop 0 repeats the animation indefinitely. Check the result because a multipage TIFF does not become a multipage GIF; it becomes separate GIF files or an animated GIF.

Using a desktop image editor

In GIMP, open the TIFF through File → Open, then choose File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .gif, and select Export. In Photoshop, use File → Export → Export As, select GIF, adjust the image size and palette options, and choose Export. IrfanView and XnConvert can also save or batch-convert TIFF files to GIF; their exact menu labels vary by version.

Quality and compatibility limits

• Photographs, shaded scans, and gradients may show banding, dithering, or posterization because GIF cannot preserve TIFF’s full color depth. Inspect the converted image at its intended display size.
• GIF’s transparency is binary rather than continuous. TIFF pixels with partial alpha transparency may acquire opaque or transparent edges, sometimes producing halos against a new background.
• GIF is not always smaller than TIFF. It is efficient for flat-color artwork, but a detailed image may become both visibly worse and unexpectedly large, especially when made animated.
• Animated GIFs have no audio, limited timing precision, and potentially large file sizes. For photographs, JPEG or WebP generally gives better compression; PNG is usually more suitable for lossless full-color still graphics.
