Free online TIFF to PNG converter

A PNG may be required when a browser, website, or application does not accept TIFF files. Converting scanned or edited images can also simplify sharing and screen display, but PNG is not always smaller than a compressed TIFF or JPEG.

What the TIFF format is

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a flexible raster-image format used for scanning, printing, publishing, photography, medical imaging, GIS, and document archiving. Scanners, multifunction printers, Adobe Photoshop, desktop-publishing applications, and imaging systems commonly create TIFF files.

TIFF can store lossless LZW or ZIP compression, lossy JPEG compression, high bit depths, RGB or CMYK color, transparency, extensive metadata, and multiple images or pages in one file. These features suit production and archival workflows, but TIFF files and their specialized tags are not supported consistently by browsers and office software.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a raster format that uses lossless compression. It supports grayscale, indexed color, RGB images, 8-bit or 16-bit channels, and an alpha channel for transparency.

PNG is well suited to screenshots, diagrams, logos, interface graphics, and images with sharp edges or transparent backgrounds. It does not support CMYK color, and photographic PNG files are often larger than JPEG files. A normal PNG contains one image; a multipage TIFF therefore has to be exported as several PNG files, or as an animation format such as APNG when that is specifically required.

How to convert the file

You can convert a file on 101convert.com without installing software. Upload the TIFF, choose PNG as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting PNG. Do not upload confidential scans or other sensitive images unless the service's privacy and retention terms are acceptable.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick is useful for command-line and batch conversion. In a terminal opened in the folder containing the source file, run:

magick input.tif output.png

For a multipage TIFF, write one PNG for each page:

magick input.tif output-%03d.png

To convert every TIFF in a folder while keeping the originals, use:

magick mogrify -format png *.tif

This writes PNG files beside the TIFF files. To place them in another directory, create that directory first and run:

magick mogrify -path png-output -format png *.tif

To set output resolution metadata without adding pixels, set the density for the output:

magick input.tif -density 300 output.png

Density metadata affects how some print or layout applications interpret physical size; it does not increase image detail. ImageMagick's shell wildcard syntax can differ between Windows and Unix-like systems, so process files individually or use the shell's appropriate batch syntax when necessary.

Using a desktop image editor

In Photoshop, open the TIFF with File → Open, then use File → Export → Export As, select PNG, choose the required options, and export. In GIMP, use File → Open, then File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .png, and confirm the PNG export settings.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG compression is lossless for the pixels supplied to the encoder, but it cannot restore detail lost through JPEG-compressed TIFF data, a low-resolution scan, or earlier editing. A normal conversion preserves pixel dimensions unless resizing is selected.

CMYK TIFF files must generally be converted to RGB because PNG has no CMYK color model. This can change colors, especially when the source uses a specific print profile. In ImageMagick, an explicit sRGB conversion is:

magick input.tif -colorspace sRGB output.png

Transparency can be retained when the source contains a compatible alpha channel, but TIFF-specific metadata, print profiles, layered editing data, multipage structure, and specialized tags may not survive. Check the exported PNG in its target application when color accuracy, transparency, dimensions, or archival metadata matters.
