Convert PXZ to PNG

Convert Pixlr layered PXZ projects to compatible PNG images without losing the original file.

We can't read PXZ files yet, so this conversion isn't available. If you can export your work to one of these formats - or others - we'll turn it into PNG:

How to convert pxz to png file

A PNG may be required by a website, image editor, documentation system, or upload form that does not accept a Pixlr project. Exporting also creates a broadly compatible, lossless image for sharing, but it removes the editable project structure.

What the PXZ format is

PXZ is commonly used for a Pixlr Zipped Layered Image: a proprietary, compressed Pixlr project that can contain raster content, layers, transparency, text, and editing data. It is used by Pixlr users who need to save layered work for later editing rather than exchange a finished image.

PXZ is not the same as Pixelmator’s native formats, and changing a .pxz extension to .png does not convert the file. Pixlr support can vary between current and legacy versions, so the application or service that created the file is the most reliable way to open it.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a lossless raster format supported by web browsers, operating systems, office software, print workflows, and most image editors. It preserves pixel detail without JPEG-style compression artifacts and supports an alpha channel for transparent backgrounds.

PNG suits screenshots, logos, diagrams, interface graphics, and illustrations. It is often larger than JPEG or WebP for photographs, so PNG is not automatically the smallest output format.

How to convert PXZ to PNG

Use Pixlr first; generic desktop image editors usually do not understand the proprietary PXZ structure.

  1. Open Pixlr Editor or the Pixlr application or service that created the file.
  2. Use Open image, File → Open, or the equivalent import command, then select the .pxz file.
  3. Check the canvas dimensions, layer visibility, text, effects, and background. Hide any layers that should not appear in the finished image.
  4. Use Save, Export, or File → Export, select PNG, and enter a filename such as image.png.
  5. Keep the original pixel dimensions unless a smaller output is required. Preserve transparency if the design uses an alpha channel, then download or save the PNG.

Menu names differ between Pixlr versions. If the file does not open, verify that it is actually a PXZ file, obtain the Pixlr version that created it, or ask the sender to export it. GIMP, Photoshop, Pixelmator, and ImageMagick should not be assumed to support PXZ directly.

Online conversion options

Online services such as Convertio, CloudConvert, and Zamzar can be considered only if their current format lists explicitly show PXZ as an input. Many general-purpose converters do not support this proprietary format; accepting an upload or allowing a renamed file does not prove that the contents were decoded.

For a supported service, upload the PXZ file, choose PNG, start the conversion, and download the result. Do not upload confidential artwork, personal data, or unreleased material unless the service’s retention and deletion policies are acceptable. Pixlr remains preferable when the file contains layers or effects that need accurate rendering.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG export renders the project as a flat image. The PNG normally does not retain Pixlr layers, masks, editable text, vector objects, adjustment settings, or effects as separate components, so keep the original PXZ for future edits.

PNG compression itself is lossless, but the rendered result can differ if the project uses unsupported effects, missing fonts, unusual color profiles, or partially transparent layers. Inspect the exported file in a second image viewer when transparency or color accuracy matters, and retain the intended color profile and final pixel dimensions for print work.

Frequently asked questions

Are PXZ layers lost when converting to PNG?

Yes, a PNG contains one flattened image rather than separate PXZ layers. Text, masks, effects, and other layer properties are rendered into the visible result and are no longer independently editable.

Does converting PXZ to PNG reduce image quality?

PNG uses lossless compression, so it does not introduce JPEG-like compression artifacts. However, the result is limited to the PXZ project's raster resolution, and reducing its dimensions before export can remove detail.

Will transparency from a PXZ project work in PNG?

Yes, PNG can preserve transparent pixels from a PXZ project when the export keeps an alpha channel. A solid background layer or an export setting that replaces transparency with a background colour will make those areas opaque.

Why does my converted PNG look different from the PXZ project?

The PNG shows the rendered canvas, so hidden layers, editable text, layer effects, or unsupported project features may not appear as separate elements. Differences can also result from the export applying a background colour or from fonts and colour handling being rendered differently.
