Convert PXZ to JPG

People convert a PXZ project when a website, phone, email client, printer, or image editor requires a standard image instead of an editable Pixlr document. Exporting also creates a flattened copy that is easier to share and usually smaller than the project file.

What the PXZ format is

In the Pixlr ecosystem, PXZ is a proprietary, compressed project format for layered images. It can preserve editable elements such as layers, text, masks, effects, and other project data. PXZ is not a standard raster-image format, and its internal specification is not broadly implemented by third-party software.

PXZ files are mainly used by people creating or editing artwork in Pixlr. The extension should not be confused with Pixelmator documents, which normally use other extensions such as .pxd; Pixelmator is not a dependable PXZ converter.

What JPG provides

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster format used for photographs, web images, email attachments, previews, and general-purpose editing. Its lossy compression produces much smaller files than layered project formats.

JPG contains only a flattened view of the project. It does not retain layers, editable text, masks, effects, vector objects, or adjustment settings. It also does not support transparency; transparent areas must be composited against a background color before export.

How to convert PXZ to JPG in Pixlr

1. Make a backup of the original .pxz file so it remains available for later edits.
2. Open Pixlr in a supported browser and use its image-opening command, such as Open image, to select the PXZ file. Pixlr interface labels can differ between its editor versions.
3. Check the opened project for missing fonts, unavailable effects, incorrect layer positions, or other rendering changes. Resolve these before exporting.
4. Use the editor's Save or Export command, select JPG/JPEG, and choose the required quality setting.
5. Set a background color if the project contains transparent areas. Keep the original pixel dimensions unless a smaller image is required, then download or save the exported JPG.

Pixlr's current account and plan rules can affect available exports or storage, so check the options shown by the service rather than relying on older claims about a fixed free-export allowance.

If Pixlr cannot open the file

Verify that the file really came from Pixlr and that its extension is exactly .pxz. Renaming .pxz to .jpg changes only the filename; it does not decode or convert the file.

Try the Pixlr product or version that created the project, and keep a copy before testing another application. GIMP, Photoshop, Pixelmator, ImageMagick, and ordinary photo viewers generally cannot be expected to open proprietary PXZ projects with their layers intact.

Online conversion services such as CloudConvert or Zamzar should be used only if their current upload page explicitly lists PXZ as a supported input. A service that accepts only common image formats cannot convert PXZ merely because the extension is supplied. Do not upload confidential artwork or personal data to a third-party converter; opening the file in Pixlr and exporting locally in the browser is the more predictable option. There is no broadly reliable standalone desktop converter for PXZ.

Quality and compatibility limits

Higher JPEG quality preserves more detail but creates a larger file; lower quality can produce block artifacts, color smearing, and halos around text, line art, and sharp edges. Export once at the required dimensions and quality instead of repeatedly opening and resaving the JPG, because each JPEG save can add further loss.

Use PNG instead when the image contains transparency, screenshots, logos, flat-color artwork, or small text that must remain sharp. Inspect the JPG after export because fonts, color profiles, blending modes, and specialized Pixlr effects can render differently outside the original editor.
