Free online DOC to PNG converter

A PNG is required when a document must appear in a web page, messaging app, design program, or device that cannot open Word files. Converting the pages to images also creates a fixed visual copy for sharing or archiving, but each page becomes a separate PNG.

What the DOC format is

DOC is Microsoft Word's legacy binary document format, used primarily by Word 97–2003. It can store editable paragraphs, styles, tables, images, headers, footers, fields, and page-layout data. Microsoft Word, LibreOffice Writer, OpenOffice Writer, and older document-management systems can open DOC files; current Word versions normally save files as DOCX.

Fonts, printer settings, field results, and application-specific layout behavior can affect rendering. A converted page may therefore have different line breaks, pagination, or table positions from the original.

What the PNG format is

PNG is a raster image format with lossless compression. It supports indexed or full-color images and optional transparency, making it suitable for screenshots, document previews, scanned pages, text, and graphics with sharp edges.

PNG does not preserve editable paragraphs, styles, comments, hyperlinks as document objects, or normally selectable text. It also does not provide a standard multipage document container, so a multipage DOC produces separate files such as document-1.png and document-2.png.

How to convert a DOC file to PNG

Using 101convert

Using LibreOffice and Poppler locally

For a local, repeatable conversion, render the DOC to PDF with LibreOffice, then rasterize each PDF page with Poppler's pdftoppm utility:

The first command creates /tmp/document.pdf. The second creates one PNG per PDF page, using names such as /tmp/document-1.png. Replace the paths with locations appropriate to the operating system; on Windows, use the full path to soffice.exe if LibreOffice is not on PATH. Poppler must also be installed separately.

For a graphical workflow, open the DOC in LibreOffice Writer, verify the layout, choose File → Export as PDF, and rasterize the PDF with a PDF-to-image utility. Microsoft Word can likewise create the intermediate file through File → Save As, choosing PDF. Converting the complete DOC through PDF preserves page boundaries; saving an embedded picture from Word produces only that picture, not a PNG of the document page.

Quality and compatibility considerations

The -r 200 option sets rasterization to 200 DPI. Use about 150 DPI for small previews, 300 DPI for readable printed text, or 600 DPI for fine line work; higher values increase pixel dimensions, processing time, and file size. PNG compression is lossless, but it cannot recover detail missing from the source or altered during rendering.

Install the document's fonts before conversion and inspect every output page for changed line breaks, missing symbols, shifted tables, and incorrect fields. DOC macros are not executed by these conversion commands. For long documents or files that must retain selectable text and compact pagination, PDF is usually a better output format; use PNG when an image file is specifically required.
