Free online JFIF to PNG converter

A design application, upload form, or device may require PNG instead of a .jfif image. Converting the file provides PNG compatibility and lossless saving, but it cannot restore detail already removed by JPEG compression.

What the JFIF format is

JFIF (JPEG File Interchange Format) is a standard way to store a JPEG-compressed still image together with interchange information such as resolution and color details. Files commonly use the .jfif extension, although many files named .jpg or .jpeg also contain JFIF data.

Web browsers, image editors, office software, scanners, cameras, and older applications may create or export JFIF files. JFIF uses JPEG's lossy compression, which usually makes photographic images much smaller than losslessly compressed formats. Standard JFIF images do not contain an alpha channel for transparency.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression, so saving an already decoded image as PNG does not add another generation of JPEG artifacts. PNG supports grayscale, indexed color, RGB, and RGBA images, including an alpha channel for transparency.

PNG is suitable for logos, screenshots, diagrams, interface graphics, and images that require repeated editing or transparent backgrounds. It is usually much larger than JFIF for photographs because PNG is not optimized for continuous-tone images with JPEG-style lossy compression.

Convert JFIF to PNG on 101convert.com

4. Open the PNG in an image viewer and check its dimensions, colors, and transparency before using it.

Do not rename image.jfif to image.png manually. Changing the extension does not change the encoded image format.

Convert locally with ImageMagick

ImageMagick converts the file from a terminal without uploading it:

The command normally retains the source dimensions and writes a PNG using the decoded JPEG image. For multiple files, give each input a distinct output filename and keep the original JFIF files rather than overwriting them.

Convert with GIMP

1. Open GIMP and choose File → Open, then select the JFIF file.
2. Choose File → Export As.
3. Set the output filename to end in .png, or select PNG in the file-type list, and choose Export.
4. Use the default PNG options unless you specifically need a reduced-color palette or another compression setting.

Quality and compatibility limitations

JPEG artifacts such as blockiness, ringing, and color smearing remain after conversion. PNG prevents further loss when the converted image is saved again, but it cannot reconstruct detail discarded during earlier JPEG compression.

A normal JFIF image is opaque, so conversion normally produces an opaque PNG. PNG transparency appears only when an editor adds an alpha channel and removes, masks, or makes part of the background transparent; conversion alone does not create transparency.

Color profiles and metadata may not transfer identically between applications or conversion tools. Check the output if accurate color, embedded profiles, resolution metadata, or other metadata is required.

Compare file sizes before replacing the original: a PNG made from a photograph may be several times larger than the JFIF. Keep the original for compact photographic storage or distribution, and use PNG when transparency, repeated lossless editing, or application compatibility is the priority.
