Free online AVIF to PNG converter

An older editor, document application, operating system, or upload form may accept PNG but reject AVIF. Converting also provides a lossless, transparent image for editing, screenshots, graphics, or software with limited AVIF support.

What the AVIF format is

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format based on the AV1 video codec and ISO Base Media File Format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency, animation, wide-gamut color, and high-bit-depth images, usually producing smaller files than PNG or JPEG.

Web publishers, modern browsers, Android workflows, content-management systems, and newer photo or graphics applications use AVIF to reduce image-transfer and storage size. Chromium-based browsers, Firefox, Safari, Android, and current image libraries can display or create it, but older desktop software, upload forms, and document applications may not support it.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) uses lossless compression and supports alpha transparency, color profiles, and commonly used 8-bit or 16-bit RGB and grayscale data. It suits screenshots, interface assets, diagrams, logos, line art, transparent graphics, and images that will be edited repeatedly.

PNG files are generally much larger than equivalent AVIF files, especially for photographs. Standard PNG is not an animated format; an animated AVIF must be exported as separate PNG frames or converted to another animation format.

Convert with ImageMagick

Install a current ImageMagick build compiled with AVIF support, then run:

magick input.avif output.png

For multiple files in a POSIX shell, use:

for f in *.avif; do magick "$f" "${f%.avif}.png"; done

On Windows, this command converts matching files in the current directory and writes PNG files beside them:

magick mogrify -format png *.avif

If ImageMagick reports that AVIF is unsupported, install a build linked to libheif or libavif, or use a newer release. Check the build with magick -version.

Convert with desktop image software

Current versions of GIMP, XnView MP, and Photoshop may open AVIF files when their installed codecs and versions support it. Open the file, use File → Export or File → Save as, select PNG, and save. XnView MP can batch-convert files through its conversion tools; do not assume that older XnView Classic releases have native AVIF support.

Convert animated AVIF files

Use an FFmpeg build with AVIF decoding support to export animation frames:

ffmpeg -i input.avif frame-%03d.png

This produces one PNG per decoded frame. FFmpeg support depends on the installed build and its linked codecs; a static AVIF may produce a single output image. PNG cannot preserve animation in one standard file.

Quality and compatibility limits

PNG cannot restore detail discarded when the AVIF was encoded with lossy compression. The conversion stops further lossy compression, but it does not recover missing detail, colors, or sharpness.

Transparency normally carries over when the converter preserves the alpha channel. HDR, wide-gamut, and high-bit-depth AVIF files may be tone-mapped, converted to standard RGB, or reduced to 8 bits by software with limited color-management support. Check the output color profile and bit depth when accurate color is required.

Converting a photographic AVIF to PNG can increase its size substantially. Keep the AVIF as the compact original and create PNG copies only when compatibility, transparency, or lossless pixel editing requires them.
