How to convert avif to jpg file

Older editors, office applications, websites, and devices may reject AVIF files even when modern browsers can display them. Converting the image creates a JPG copy for sharing, printing, or editing, but the copy may be larger and less detailed.

What the AVIF format is

AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) is an image format based on the AV1 video codec and an ISO Base Media File Format container. It commonly produces smaller files than JPEG at comparable visual quality and can store transparency, HDR data, wide-gamut color, higher bit depth, and animation.

AVIF files commonly come from modern websites, image-delivery systems, and newer photo or graphics applications. Current versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge support AVIF, but older browsers, desktop programs, document tools, operating systems, and hardware may not.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy image format with near-universal support across browsers, phones, operating systems, printers, office applications, and image editors. It is well suited to photographs and other continuous-tone images.

JPEG compression reduces file size by discarding image data. Its quality setting provides a predictable size-versus-quality trade-off, but JPEG does not support transparency and standard JPG workflows generally use 8-bit color. Text, screenshots, diagrams, and images with sharp edges can show ringing or block artifacts; PNG is usually a better target for those images.

How to convert an AVIF file

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the AVIF-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com. It can be used without installing software.
  2. Select or upload the .avif file.
  3. Choose JPG or JPEG as the output format if a format selector is shown.
  4. Start the conversion, then download the resulting .jpg file.
  5. Open the downloaded file in the application or device that rejected the original AVIF.

Use a local converter for private or sensitive images that should not be uploaded. Keep the original AVIF if its metadata, transparency, HDR information, or maximum image quality may be needed later.

Using desktop software

ImageMagick can batch-process files from a command line, provided the installation includes an AVIF decoder. Run:

magick input.avif -quality 90 output.jpg

The JPEG -quality value normally ranges from у0000 to 100; higher values retain more detail and produce larger files. Values around 85–95 are commonly suitable for photographs. Some operating-system packages require an AVIF delegate such as libheif; if ImageMagick reports that it cannot read AVIF, install a build with AVIF support rather than changing the command.

XnConvert provides a graphical batch workflow on Windows, macOS, and Linux when the installed version supports AVIF. Add the files through File → Add files, set JPG as the output format in the output settings, choose a destination folder, and start the conversion. Verify AVIF support in the program version because format support depends on its bundled libraries.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Conversion decodes the AVIF and re-encodes the pixels as JPEG, so it is not lossless. Do not repeatedly open and save the JPG; each JPEG save can discard more data.
  • AVIF transparency has no direct JPEG equivalent. Transparent areas must be composited against a background, often white, and the result will be opaque.
  • HDR, wide-gamut, 10-bit, or 12-bit AVIF content may be converted to 8-bit sRGB JPEG. Without color management or tone mapping, brightness, colors, and highlight detail can change.
  • AVIF animation cannot be represented by one ordinary JPG. A converter will typically export one frame or require separate frame handling; use an animated format when the motion must be preserved.
  • JPEG is often larger than AVIF at similar visual quality, especially for web photographs. Select the quality setting according to the intended use instead of assuming the converted file will be smaller.
  • EXIF, ICC color profiles, XMP data, and other metadata may be removed or altered during conversion. Check the output if camera metadata or color-managed printing matters.
