Convert DESKTHEMEPACK to JPG

People extract wallpapers from a Windows theme package when a phone, image editor, website, or archive requires an individual JPG file. Because DESKTHEMEPACK is a Cabinet archive rather than a single image, the process is extraction followed by image conversion.

What the DESKTHEMEPACK format is

.deskthemepack is a Windows desktop-theme package introduced with Windows 8 and used by Windows users to distribute wallpaper, color, sound, and other desktop settings. It is a Cabinet-based archive that can contain a .theme definition, wallpaper files, and other theme resources; it is not itself an image format.

A package can contain several wallpapers or resolutions. Opening it through Windows may apply the theme instead of producing an image, so inspect the archive when you need a particular wallpaper.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster format for photographs, wallpapers, websites, phones, and other consumer devices. Its lossy compression usually produces much smaller files than BMP and often smaller files than PNG for photographic images.

JPEG has no transparency channel, and every save can discard additional image data. PNG or BMP is preferable for text, sharp interface graphics, transparency, or archival masters.

How to extract and convert the files

7-Zip and XnConvert on Windows

1. Install 7-Zip and XnConvert from their official websites.
2. Make a copy of the original file. In 7-Zip, right-click the copy and choose 7-Zip → Open archive. If 7-Zip does not recognize the extension, rename the copy from theme.deskthemepack to theme.cab; changing the extension only exposes the Cabinet archive and does not convert its contents.
3. Choose 7-Zip → Extract to “theme\”, or extract the archive to a new folder.
4. Search the extracted folder for wallpaper images such as .jpg, .jpeg, .png, or .bmp. Ignore the .theme file and non-image resources.
5. If the required wallpaper is already .jpg or .jpeg, copy it without re-saving it. Otherwise, open the image in XnConvert, choose Output → Format → JPEG, select a destination folder, and start the conversion.
6. Use a quality setting around 90–95 when the application uses a 0–100 scale. Do not enable resizing unless the target device or website requires different dimensions.

ImageMagick command line

After extracting the wallpaper, convert a PNG with:

magick wallpaper.png -quality 92 wallpaper.jpg

Replace the filenames for other supported source formats. For multiple files, run the command for each source or use an operating-system batch script; keep the extracted originals as the lossless or less-compressed source files.

Online conversion

Services such as CloudConvert and Convertio generally convert image files rather than unpacking DESKTHEMEPACK archives. Extract the package locally first, upload only the selected PNG or BMP, choose JPG as the output, and download the result. Do not upload a package containing private wallpapers, personal audio, or other sensitive resources.

Quality and compatibility limits

Choose the wallpaper whose dimensions and crop match the intended display; a theme can include multiple images or resolutions. Conversion does not improve source resolution, and some applications or devices may resize the output during import.

Converting PNG or BMP to JPG removes transparency and introduces lossy compression. Use high quality, avoid repeated JPG saves, and retain the original extracted image for future editing or archival use.
