How to convert png to jpg file

Some websites, applications, phones, and printing workflows accept JPG but reject PNG, while photographic PNG files can be unnecessarily large. Converting replaces PNG's lossless storage with smaller, lossy JPEG compression, and transparent areas must be assigned a background color.

What the PNG format is

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is a lossless raster format used for screenshots, logos, icons, diagrams, interface graphics, and images that need transparent backgrounds. It preserves pixel data exactly and supports an alpha channel for partial or complete transparency.

Browsers, operating systems, and graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop, GIMP, Krita, and Inkscape commonly create or export PNG files. PNG is often efficient for flat-color artwork and sharp text, but a photographic PNG can be much larger than an equivalent JPG.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a lossy raster format designed mainly for photographs and images with continuous color changes. Its compression discards image data to produce substantially smaller files than lossless PNG in many photographic cases.

JPG has broad support across websites, phones, cameras, image viewers, office software, and printing services. It does not store transparency or animation, and repeated editing and saving can add visible compression artifacts. The .jpg and .jpeg extensions normally identify the same format.

How to convert the file

Using 101convert.com

  1. Open the PNG-to-JPG converter on 101convert.com.
  2. Select or upload the .png file.
  3. If the PNG has transparency, choose a background color, such as white, before conversion.
  4. If a quality control is available, start around 85–90%. The exact result depends on the converter and image, so inspect the output before replacing the original.
  5. Start the conversion and download the resulting .jpg file.

This method requires no software installation and is suitable for individual or occasional conversions.

Using ImageMagick

ImageMagick can convert files from a terminal. This command places transparent pixels over a white background and disables the alpha channel required by JPG:

magick input.png -background white -alpha remove -alpha off -quality 85 output.jpg

Replace input.png and output.jpg with the required filenames. The -quality setting generally ranges from 1 to 100; higher values usually preserve more detail and create larger files, but quality percentages are not directly comparable across all software.

Using desktop image software

In GIMP, open the file with File → Open. If it contains transparency, add and fill a background layer beneath the artwork, then use File → Export As, enter a filename ending in .jpg, and choose the JPEG quality in the export dialog.

In Photoshop, open the PNG, add a background layer if needed, then use File → Export → Export As or File → Save a Copy, select JPG, and set the quality. Other image editors use equivalent open, flatten, and export commands.

Quality and compatibility limits

  • Transparency is lost. Transparent pixels are flattened against the selected color. Semi-transparent edges can develop a halo when the chosen background differs from the intended display background.
  • PNG is usually preferable for screenshots, text, line art, logos, and diagrams because JPG artifacts can blur edges and create block patterns. Convert these images only when the destination requires JPG or the size reduction is necessary.
  • JPG conversion is not reversible. Keep the original PNG or an editable project file for future changes, and avoid repeatedly opening and saving the JPG because each save can apply additional lossy compression.
  • A PNG may contain higher bit depth, unusual color modes, or an embedded color profile that the JPG workflow does not preserve. Check colors and gradients after conversion, especially for printing or other color-sensitive work.
