ODS is the OpenDocument Spreadsheet format, used mainly by spreadsheet applications such as LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and other office suites that support the OpenDocument standard. It stores worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, and sometimes embedded objects. ODS is commonly used for editable spreadsheets, data analysis, reports, and office document exchange.

Target format

JPG or JPEG is a widely supported raster image format. It is ideal for photographs and visual snapshots because it offers small file sizes and broad compatibility with browsers, operating systems, and image viewers. For spreadsheet conversion, JPG is typically used to create a static image of a sheet or a selected range for sharing, previewing, or embedding in documents.

How to perform the conversion

The most reliable way to convert ODS to JPG is to open the spreadsheet in a desktop office suite, export or print it to PDF, and then convert the PDF pages to JPG images. This preserves layout better than trying to render the spreadsheet directly as an image.

1. Open the .ods file in LibreOffice Calc or another compatible spreadsheet program.
2. Adjust the sheet view if needed: set print area, page orientation, scaling, margins, and page breaks so the content fits the way you want.
3. Export the spreadsheet to PDF using File → Export As → Export as PDF or File → Export as PDF, depending on the application.
4. Convert the resulting PDF to JPG. In LibreOffice, you can also use File → Export if your version offers image export for selected content, but PDF is usually the most dependable intermediate step.
5. If you need one JPG per page, use a PDF-to-image workflow. For example, with ImageMagick or Poppler tools you can render pages to JPEG files.

Example command-line workflow with Poppler and ImageMagick:

pdftoppm -jpeg input.pdf output

This creates JPEG files such as output-1.jpg, output-2.jpg, and so on. If you prefer ImageMagick and it is configured to read PDFs on your system, you can also use:

magick -density 200 input.pdf output.jpg

Notes on quality and limitations

ODS to JPG is a one-way conversion: the result is a flat image, so formulas, cell editing, filters, and other spreadsheet features are lost. If the spreadsheet has multiple sheets, each sheet may become a separate image or separate PDF page depending on the export settings.

Image quality depends heavily on the page setup and the rendering resolution. If the sheet is wide, text may become too small or wrap unexpectedly when exported. Increasing the PDF export resolution or using a higher DPI during PDF-to-JPG conversion can improve clarity, but it also increases file size.

Because JPG uses lossy compression, fine grid lines and small text may show artifacts. If you need sharper text or exact visual fidelity, PNG is often a better image target than JPG. JPG is still useful when smaller file size matters more than perfect sharpness.

Compatibility is generally excellent because JPG opens in nearly all image viewers and web platforms. However, if your spreadsheet contains transparent backgrounds, charts with crisp edges, or very small fonts, the conversion may not look as clean as the original ODS file.
