Convert SLM to JPG

A JPG is needed when a hidden Gallery Lock photo must be opened or shared outside the Android app, or when a metal-print build must be shown in a report. The .slm extension is ambiguous, so the correct method depends on the program or device that created the file.

Identify the SLM file source

SLM is not one universal format. On Android, Gallery Lock and similarly named vault apps may use .slm for hidden media or encrypted app data. In metal additive manufacturing, proprietary .slm files can contain selective laser melting build data produced for a specific printer workflow, including part placement, supports, layers, and machine instructions.

A file taken from a Gallery Lock folder should be handled as protected app data. A file created by build-preparation software for an SLM printer must be opened by the software and printer workflow that created it. Renaming either type of file to .jpg does not convert it.

Recovering Gallery Lock media

Use the original Gallery Lock app first. Sign in with the correct PIN, password, or recovery method, select the media, then use its Unhide, Restore, Export, or share function. This is the only reliable method when the app encrypts its stored files.

Do not assume that every .slm file is a JPEG with a fixed header added to it. Gallery-vault apps have used different storage methods across versions, including encryption, renamed files, databases, thumbnails, and proprietary containers. Deleting the first 1,024 bytes can permanently damage a file and will not decrypt encrypted data.

If the app was removed or the device was reset, restore the app and its data from a backup made before the loss, then open the files through the restored app. Android backups often exclude app-private data, and an encrypted vault may require the original credentials or encryption keys. Data-recovery software can restore deleted file fragments from some storage media, but it cannot turn encrypted vault data into JPG files without the required decryption information.

Work only on copies of recovered .slm files. If a copy opens as an image in a trusted image viewer, export it as JPG; otherwise, retain the original file and identify the exact app version before attempting forensic repair.

Creating a JPG from a metal-print build file

Machine-specific SLM build files are manufacturing data, not ordinary image files. Open the file in the build-preparation application that created it or in the printer vendor's approved software, such as the relevant SLM Solutions build-processing workflow.

1. Open the .slm build file in its source application.
2. Set the required model angle, build-plate view, layer preview, or support view.
3. Hide grids, axes, selection highlights, and panels if they should not appear in the record.
4. Use an available command such as File → Export, File → Save image, or View → Screenshot.
5. Select JPG/JPEG, choose the required pixel dimensions and quality setting, and save the image.

If the software cannot export an image, capture the prepared viewport with Win+Shift+S on Windows or Shift+Command+4 on macOS. Open the capture in Paint, Preview, GIMP, or Photoshop and use File → Save as or File → Export to create a JPG.

Some build applications can export a separate interchange model such as .stl, .obj, or .3mf; many do not allow this from a finalized machine build. If export is available, import that model into Blender, frame a camera view, choose Output Properties → File Format → JPEG, render with Render → Render Image, then use Image → Save As.

JPG limits and conversion services

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported, lossy raster-image format. It is suitable for report illustrations, email attachments, web uploads, and visual records, but it contains pixels only. It cannot preserve or restore 3D geometry, laser paths, slice data, supports, measurements, material settings, passwords, or encryption keys.

Export at the final pixel dimensions. High JPEG quality reduces artifacts around text, dimensions, layer boundaries, and sharp model edges; enlarging a small JPG later cannot add detail. Use PNG instead for screenshots with fine annotations, thin lines, or a transparent background.

Generic online converters should not be used for Gallery Lock files or proprietary printer builds: they normally cannot interpret the format and may expose private images, designs, or manufacturing parameters. After a file has already been recovered or exported as a normal image such as PNG, reputable services including CloudConvert or Zamzar can convert that ordinary image to JPG, but local software is preferable for sensitive material.

Keep the original .slm file and any exported model or project file. A JPG is a preview or documentation record, not a replacement for protected media or manufacturing data.
