How to convert prnx to jpg file

A PRNX report must be converted when the receiving application, website, or device accepts JPG images but cannot read DevExpress report documents. The conversion renders each report page as a raster image for viewing, sharing, or embedding.

What the PRNX format is

PRNX is a proprietary DevExpress XtraReports print-preview document format. It normally stores a generated report document and its rendered pages; it is not the same as a report design file such as .repx. PRNX files are used by applications built with DevExpress reporting and printing libraries, and may be saved from a report preview for later viewing or printing.

Windows Photos, web browsers, and most image editors do not open PRNX files. Use the DevExpress application that created the file, a compatible DevExpress report viewer, or custom software built with the relevant DevExpress libraries. A generic file converter may not recognize PRNX.

What the JPG format is

JPG, also called JPEG, is a widely supported raster image format. It is accepted by browsers, office applications, messaging systems, image viewers, and many upload forms, and its lossy compression usually produces smaller files than uncompressed images.

JPG has no document-page structure. A multi-page PRNX report must therefore be exported as separate JPG files, one per page, or combined into one tall image if the software provides that option. JPEG compression can blur small text, thin rules, barcodes, and other high-contrast details.

Convert PRNX with a DevExpress viewer

  1. Open the file in the DevExpress-based application that generated it, or in that application's report preview.
  2. Choose Export, Export document, or the equivalent command.
  3. Select JPEG or JPG as the image format.
  4. Choose an output folder, image quality, resolution, and page range if those settings are available.
  5. Export all pages or select individual pages. Check the output folder because multi-page reports commonly produce numbered files such as report_1.jpg and report_2.jpg.

Menu names depend on the host application and DevExpress version. Report Designer, a DevExpress Document Viewer, or a custom XtraReports application is more appropriate than a general-purpose archive or image utility.

Convert through PDF

Use PDF as an intermediate format when the viewer cannot export images directly or when you need reliable pagination.

  1. Open the PRNX file in the DevExpress viewer and choose Export → PDF. Save the result as report.pdf.
  2. Rasterize the PDF with a desktop utility such as Poppler. For example, run pdftoppm -jpeg -r 150 report.pdf page to create one JPG per page.
  3. Use -r 300 instead of -r 150 when small text must remain readable in print output. Higher resolution also increases file dimensions and storage requirements.

Applications such as Adobe Acrobat and other PDF viewers can also export PDF pages as JPEG images. This route preserves the PDF's page boundaries before rasterization but does not preserve searchable text in the final JPG files.

Use DevExpress code

A developer can load the PRNX into the DevExpress printing system and call its image-export method with image options set to JPEG. Set the export resolution, quality, and page range through the version-specific ImageExportOptions or equivalent API. DevExpress API names and multi-page export behavior differ between framework and library versions, so verify them against the installed version's documentation rather than copying code from an unrelated release.

If the application exposes no image export API, export the loaded document to PDF through DevExpress and rasterize that PDF with Poppler, ImageMagick, or another local PDF renderer.

Online conversion options

Direct PRNX support is uncommon. Do not rename .prnx to .jpg; changing the extension does not convert the file, and a PDF-to-JPG service cannot read PRNX directly.

For a non-confidential report, first create report.pdf locally with DevExpress, then upload the PDF to a reputable PDF-to-JPG service such as Adobe Acrobat online, CloudConvert, or Zamzar if its current service page supports the required output. Do not upload confidential, personal, financial, or regulated reports unless third-party processing is permitted by your data policy. A local converter avoids that disclosure.

Quality and compatibility limits

JPG output is a flattened image: it does not retain selectable text, hyperlinks, report fields, vector objects, editable layout, or reliable multi-page structure. Choose PDF when printing, text search, accessibility, or one file containing all pages matters.

Choose PNG instead of JPG for screenshots, line drawings, small text, signatures, or barcodes when file size is less important. If JPG is mandatory, use the highest available quality and export at 300 DPI for print-oriented content; inspect the result at 100% scale before distribution.

A PRNX generated by a different or newer DevExpress version may fail to load in an older viewer. If it will not open, obtain the creating application or ask the sender to provide PDF, PNG, or JPG instead. A PRNX is generally a saved generated document, so missing original report data is not normally the cause of a simple preview failure; incompatible DevExpress assemblies, damaged files, or unavailable fonts are more likely causes.
