Convert PRNX to DOCX

Microsoft Word cannot open PRNX files directly, so conversion is needed when a report must be edited, shared, or archived as an Office document. The usual route is to open the saved DevExpress print document with its originating application or printing library and export it as .docx.

What the PRNX format is

.prnx is a proprietary DevExpress Printing System document. It is commonly created by applications built with DevExpress XtraReports or DevExpress Reporting when a generated report is saved from a print-preview workflow.

A PRNX file represents rendered report output and page-layout information; it is not normally the original report design. A .repx file generally contains the report layout, bands, controls, expressions, and data-binding configuration used to generate that output. PRNX files are mainly used by developers and users of DevExpress-based reporting applications.

Microsoft Word, LibreOffice, and general-purpose viewers do not natively open PRNX. The originating DevExpress application, a compatible document viewer, or a custom application using the matching DevExpress assemblies is required.

What the DOCX format is

.docx is Microsoft Word's Office Open XML format. It supports editable text, tables, images, styles, headers, comments, and pagination, making it suitable for revising and distributing report content.

DOCX export usually reproduces the generated report rather than rebuilding its report definition. The result may contain positioned text boxes or separate layout elements instead of naturally flowing Word paragraphs.

Convert PRNX with DevExpress software

1. Install the DevExpress Reporting or XtraReports application that created the file, using the same or a compatible DevExpress version where possible.
2. Open input.prnx through the application's document viewer or print-preview loader. A report designer that only accepts .repx may not open a PRNX document.
3. Use the available File → Export or Export command and select DOCX or Microsoft Word. Menu names differ between the End-User Report Designer, Document Viewer, and custom applications.
4. Save the result as output.docx, then inspect it in Word or LibreOffice for altered page breaks, fonts, tables, images, charts, hyperlinks, and special characters.

Some older DevExpress applications expose only RTF export. In that case, choose Export → RTF, open the resulting .rtf file in Word, and use File → Save As to create a DOCX file. RTF is a fallback, not a way to recover the original report design.

Convert PRNX with the DevExpress .NET API

A compatible DevExpress printing library can load the saved printing document and export it. A typical pattern is:

Class names, namespaces, export methods, and DOCX support vary by DevExpress release and target framework. If LoadDocument fails, use the application that created the file or install the matching DevExpress assemblies; the file may depend on that application's viewer, custom controls, or licensing configuration.

Online conversion and compatibility

Most general-purpose online converters, including services such as CloudConvert and Zamzar, do not offer dependable PRNX input because conversion requires a DevExpress rendering engine. Use an online service only if it explicitly lists PRNX as an accepted input format and DOCX as the output format; changing the filename extension does not convert the file. Local conversion is preferable for reports containing personal, financial, or confidential data.

DOCX export does not normally preserve report data bindings, parameters, calculated fields, report bands, design-time controls, or the ability to regenerate the report. Missing fonts can change line wrapping and pagination, while nested tables, charts, custom controls, and positioned elements may be simplified.

For the most editable result, obtain the original .repx file and its data source, open it in DevExpress Reporting, refresh the report, and export the regenerated report to DOCX. If only PRNX is available, the conversion can preserve the visible pages but cannot reconstruct the missing report structure.
