How to convert prnx to xlsx file

A PRNX file may need conversion when a DevExpress report must be analyzed, edited, or shared in Excel. XLSX provides sortable rows, editable cells, formulas, and broader office-software compatibility than a rendered report document.

What the PRNX format is

PRNX is a proprietary DevExpress XtraReports and Printing System document format. It normally stores a generated or previewed report with rendered text, tables, images, charts, pagination, and print-layout information.

PRNX files are produced by DevExpress-based .NET applications and may be saved from a report preview or supplied as archived report output. They are not report definitions such as .repx files, and they are not general-purpose spreadsheets. Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice Calc do not normally open PRNX directly.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is the XML-based workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, ONLYOFFICE, and other spreadsheet applications. It stores worksheets with cells, formulas, formatting, filters, tables, charts, and row-and-column editing.

An XLSX export is useful when recipients need to sort report results, add calculations, reuse tables, or archive the output in a widely supported office format.

How to convert PRNX to XLSX

Using a DevExpress viewer or application

  1. Open the PRNX file in the DevExpress application that created it, or in a compatible DevExpress report preview or document-viewer application.
  2. Use File → Open, the viewer's open command, or the application's document-loading function to select report.prnx.
  3. In the preview, choose Export → XLSX, Export to → Excel, or the equivalent Excel export command. Menu names depend on the DevExpress product and version.
  4. Choose an output name such as report.xlsx and configure available options for formatting, images, page handling, or column sizing.
  5. Open the workbook in Excel or Calc and check column boundaries, merged cells, dates, totals, repeated headers, and worksheet breaks.

A report viewer may expose export commands only after the document has finished loading. If the PRNX opens but has no Excel export option, use the same DevExpress-based application or library that generated the file and update its export components to a compatible release.

Automating the conversion with .NET

In a .NET application that references the matching DevExpress assemblies, load the saved document into the Printing System and export it as XLSX. The exact class and method names vary by DevExpress release; a common pattern is:

var printingSystem = new DevExpress.XtraPrinting.PrintingSystem();
printingSystem.LoadDocument("report.prnx");
printingSystem.ExportToXlsx("report.xlsx");

Compile this code against the DevExpress version compatible with the PRNX file and verify the available export API in that release. When the original XtraReport and its data source are available, export the report directly with the DevExpress XLSX export options instead of first saving and reloading a preview document.

Online converters and compatibility

PRNX is a proprietary, relatively uncommon report-document format, and mainstream online conversion services do not consistently support it. Do not upload a PRNX file to a service unless its current input-format list explicitly names PRNX and its privacy terms are acceptable; renaming .prnx to .xlsx cannot convert the internal format. For confidential reports, use the original DevExpress application or an in-house .NET converter.

The export converts the rendered report, not necessarily its original query, relational data model, report definition, or interactive behavior. Formulas may become values, printed layouts may produce merged cells or page-oriented blocks, and charts or images may remain non-editable objects. Complex reports can require manual cleanup after export, particularly when they contain nested sections, subreports, wide tables, or heavily customized formatting.
