What the DIF format is

DIF (Data Interchange Format) is a plain-text format created for exchanging tabular spreadsheet data between applications, including VisiCalc and other early spreadsheet programs. Legacy accounting, database, laboratory, and spreadsheet systems may still export .dif files. DIF can store cell values and some formulas, but it carries far less workbook structure than current spreadsheet formats and normally does not preserve features such as multiple worksheets, charts, or rich formatting.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s XML-based workbook format, packaged as a compressed ZIP archive. It supports multiple worksheets, formulas, formatting, charts, filters, data validation, and named ranges, and is supported by Excel, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and other current spreadsheet applications. An XLSX workbook can contain up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns per worksheet. XLSX does not store VBA macros; a macro-enabled workbook must use .xlsm instead.

Convert with LibreOffice Calc

1. Copy the original .dif file so the source remains unchanged.
2. Open LibreOffice Calc and choose File → Open, then select the DIF file.
3. If an import dialog appears, check the character encoding, field or column interpretation, decimal settings, and text-quoting options. Use the preview to identify shifted columns or incorrect values.
4. Check dates, identifiers with leading zeros, blank cells, formulas, row counts, and column counts.
5. Choose File → Save As and select Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx).
6. If Calc warns that some formatting or features may not be saved in the selected format, choose Use Excel 2007–365 Format.

Convert with Microsoft Excel

1. Open Excel and choose File → Open → Browse.
2. Set the file filter to show all supported files or all files, then select the .dif file. Excel versions differ in how they expose legacy import formats; if the file is not listed, use LibreOffice Calc or the built-in converter instead.
3. Review any import prompts and confirm that columns, dates, decimal values, and text fields were interpreted correctly.
4. Choose File → Save As, select Excel Workbook (*.xlsx), and save a new copy rather than overwriting the DIF file.

Quality and compatibility limits

DIF-to-XLSX conversion changes the container and may also change how values are interpreted; it cannot restore information that was never stored in the DIF file. Formatting, worksheet structure, charts, comments, conditional formatting, named ranges, data validation, macros, and advanced formulas may be missing or altered. Formulas that import successfully may calculate differently because spreadsheet applications use different function support, date systems, and calculation rules.

Inspect dates and decimal values when the source uses regional conventions. Verify product codes, account numbers, ZIP codes, and other identifiers because automatic numeric detection can remove leading zeros. Before distributing the XLSX file, compare row and column counts, totals, formulas, and representative records with the original data.
