How to convert spv to xlsx file

SPSS output often has to be delivered as an Excel workbook so recipients can inspect tables, combine results with other data, or use them in reports without opening IBM SPSS Statistics. An .xlsx export makes table cells available to spreadsheet software, but it does not turn the output back into the original dataset.

What the SPV format contains

.spv is the proprietary output-document format used by IBM SPSS Statistics Output Viewer. It stores analysis output such as pivot tables, crosstabs, test results, model summaries, text, warnings, notes, and charts.

An SPV file normally contains displayed results rather than all source cases and variables. The underlying data is usually held separately in an SPSS data file such as .sav or .zsav. SPV files are used by SPSS analysts, researchers, and organizations distributing statistical output.

What the XLSX format provides

.xlsx is the Office Open XML workbook format used by Microsoft Excel and supported by LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, and other spreadsheet applications. A workbook can contain multiple worksheets, editable cells, formulas, filters, sorting, and formatting.

SPSS output tables exported to XLSX are usually ordinary worksheet ranges, not native Excel PivotTables. The exported values can be edited or recalculated in Excel, but SPSS table layers, pivoting behavior, and output metadata are not retained as interactive SPSS objects.

Export with IBM SPSS Statistics

  1. Open IBM SPSS Statistics and choose File → Open → Output. Select the .spv file.
  2. In the Output Viewer, select the required objects in the outline if only specific tables are needed. Use the full-output option if every visible result should be included.
  3. Choose File → Export from the Output Viewer. Do not export from the Data Editor when the requirement is to export output tables rather than the source dataset.
  4. Select Excel 2007 and later (*.xlsx) or the equivalent XLSX option in the export type list.
  5. Set the export scope to all output or selected objects, enter a destination such as results.xlsx, and complete the export.
  6. Open the workbook in Excel and verify worksheet layout, headers, decimal separators, labels, footnotes, and long tables before sending it onward.

SPSS is the most reliable desktop option because it reads its own output objects and table structure. Excel, LibreOffice Calc, and PSPP do not provide general support for opening SPV output documents directly.

Compatibility and quality limits

SPSS versions are not fully interchangeable: an older SPSS release may be unable to open an SPV file created by a newer release. When this happens, ask the sender to open the file in a compatible SPSS version and export it as XLSX, CSV, or PDF.

Pivot tables generally export better than charts. Charts may be transferred as static images, omitted by a chosen export option, or lose SPSS-specific editing features. Merged headings, nested row or column layers, custom styles, significance markers, table titles, and footnotes can require manual cleanup in Excel.

Large output documents can create many worksheets or very long ranges. Excel permits at most 1,048,576 rows per worksheet; inspect long frequency tables and crosstabs to confirm that all rows were transferred.

If the requirement is the raw data rather than displayed results, obtain the original .sav or .zsav file. Open that data file in SPSS and use File → Export to create an Excel workbook; exporting an SPV cannot reconstruct records that were never included in the output.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SPV to XLSX converter free?

Yes, converting SPV to XLSX on 101convert.com is completely free. No registration, email address or installation is required. If you need a higher file size limit or want to convert more files at once, see our plans.

How large can my SPV file be?

You can upload SPV files up to 50 MB and convert up to 20 files at once in a single batch.

What happens to my uploaded files?

Files are processed automatically and deleted from our servers within a few minutes after conversion. We never view or share your files.

Do I need to install any software to convert SPV to XLSX?

No. The SPV to XLSX conversion runs entirely online in your browser and works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Did the conversion fail?

In most cases, the cause is an incorrect file format. Please upload a valid SPV file for this SPV to XLSX conversion. Occasionally, the issue may be on our side. We analyze recurring conversion failures and disable or fix the converter if we detect a defect.

Can I edit SPV tables after converting them to XLSX?

Yes, exported SPV pivot tables usually become editable worksheet cells in the XLSX workbook. Their values and much of their visible formatting are retained, but the original interactive output structure is not.

Are SPV charts still editable in an XLSX file?

Not always, because charts and other graphical output may be exported as images or simplified chart objects. An image can be viewed and moved but its underlying data and formatting cannot be edited like native worksheet content.

Does SPV to XLSX preserve formulas and let me recalculate the results?

No, the conversion normally exports the displayed statistical results rather than the analysis formulas or source data. The resulting cells may be editable, but they generally do not reproduce the original analysis when changed.

Why are some SPV output items missing or arranged differently in XLSX?

Some SPV items, such as notes, model views, page elements, or unsupported output objects, cannot be represented directly in a workbook and may be omitted or flattened into images. The output hierarchy, page breaks, and wide tables can also be rearranged during export.
