What SPV files contain

SPV is the proprietary Output Viewer format used by IBM SPSS Statistics. An SPV file can contain pivot tables, charts, procedure output, warnings, notes, log output, and displayed syntax, but it normally does not contain the source dataset or everything needed to rerun an analysis.

Researchers, analysts, universities, and reporting teams commonly create SPV files after running procedures such as regression, crosstabs, ANOVA, or frequencies. IBM SPSS Statistics is the appropriate application for opening SPSS SPV output; GNU PSPP does not generally open it. Other programs can use the .spv extension, so confirm that the file was created by SPSS if it will not open in the Output Viewer.

What DOCX provides

DOCX is the Office Open XML document format used by Microsoft Word and supported by LibreOffice Writer and many document-management systems. It stores editable paragraphs, styles, tables, page settings, headers, footers, comments, and images.

A DOCX export does not preserve the SPSS Viewer outline, interactive pivot-table dimensions, drill-down behavior, or the ability to rerun procedures. Keep the original .spv, the relevant .sav data file, and SPSS syntax when reproducibility or audit records matter.

Export from IBM SPSS Statistics

3. Choose File → Export.

Output quality and compatibility

SPSS pivot tables may become editable Word tables, formatted text, or images according to the export method and object settings. Editable tables can require manual resizing; image-based tables preserve their appearance but cannot be edited cell by cell.

Charts commonly export as images, so Word cannot edit their data series or chart elements. Enlarge charts in SPSS before export when axis labels, confidence intervals, or significance markers are difficult to read.

Wide tables can exceed Word margins, wrap columns, or shrink text. Set suitable page orientation in the target document, reduce unnecessary columns, or split wide tables before finalizing the DOCX. Check totals, missing-value markers, decimal separators, significance symbols, footnotes, fonts, and pagination against the SPV.

Export a PDF separately when fixed visual layout is required for a final record. PDF usually preserves pagination more consistently, while DOCX is the appropriate copy for editing report content.
