Free online DIF to XLS converter

A legacy accounting or reporting program may export a table as .dif, while an older Excel-compatible system requires .xls. Converting it makes the data editable in Excel 97–2003-compatible software and easier to share with systems that do not import DIF.

What the DIF format is

DIF, or Data Interchange Format, is a plain-text spreadsheet exchange format for moving tabular data between applications. Its structured records store values, labels, and basic data-type information; it is not a modern workbook package and usually preserves little presentation layout.

VisiCalc, Lotus 1-2-3, older Microsoft Excel versions, and legacy accounting, database, laboratory, and reporting systems can create or export .dif files. A DIF file normally represents one table or worksheet rather than a complete multi-sheet workbook.

What the XLS format is

XLS is Microsoft Excel's binary workbook format used by Excel 97–2003 and older integrations. It supports multiple worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, charts, named ranges, print settings, and some macros and other workbook features.

Use XLS when the receiving application specifically requires the Excel 97–2003 format. Newer Excel releases and LibreOffice Calc can generally open XLS files. XLS has a worksheet limit of 65,536 rows and 256 columns; use XLSX instead when the destination supports it and the data exceeds those limits.

How to convert a DIF file to XLS

Using 101convert.com: Select the DIF file in the site's converter, choose XLS as the output format, start the conversion, and download the resulting workbook. This option requires no software installation and is suitable for non-sensitive files. Do not upload confidential financial, personal, medical, or proprietary data unless the service's privacy and retention terms are acceptable.

Using LibreOffice Calc:

1. Open Calc and select File → Open.
2. Choose the .dif file. In the import dialog, verify the character encoding, separators, decimal settings, date interpretation, and column types.
3. Check the preview for shifted columns, missing leading zeros, dates interpreted incorrectly, and numbers imported as text.
4. Select File → Save As, choose Excel 97–2003 (*.xls), and save the file.
5. When Calc displays a format-compatibility warning, choose Use Excel 97–2003 Format.

For repeatable local conversions, LibreOffice can often run without its graphical interface:

soffice --headless --convert-to xls --outdir converted input.dif

Create the converted directory first. Open the generated XLS afterward because headless conversion cannot show import settings or compatibility prompts. Some LibreOffice installations require a filter-specific option such as --convert-to xls:"MS Excel 97".

Using Microsoft Excel: If the installed version offers DIF import, select File → Open → Browse, change the file filter to show all files if necessary, and open the DIF file. Review the import result, then select File → Save As and choose Excel 97–2003 Workbook (*.xls). DIF import availability and behavior vary between Excel versions; use Calc or the built-in converter if Excel does not recognize the file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Conversion transfers the data represented by DIF; it cannot recreate workbook features that the source does not contain. Multiple worksheets, charts, macros, conditional formatting, comments, merged-cell layouts, data validation, named ranges, and complex formulas may be missing or require manual reconstruction. Basic formulas or type markers in a particular DIF file can also be interpreted differently by the importing application.

Check row and column counts, headings, totals, formulas, dates, times, decimal separators, negative numbers, currency symbols, blank cells, character encoding, and identifiers with leading zeros. A value such as 00127 can become 127 unless its column is imported as text. Locale settings can also change 03/04/2025 from 3 April to March 4.

Reopen the saved XLS in the target application and compare representative values with the DIF source. If the source exceeds 65,536 rows or 256 columns, XLS cannot contain the complete worksheet; split the data or use XLSX where supported.
