Free online SXC to XLSX converter

Microsoft Excel and other current spreadsheet applications may require an .xlsx workbook instead of the older .sxc format. Converting the file creates a usable Excel workbook for editing, sharing, or archiving without relying on legacy StarOffice software.

What the SXC format is

SXC is the XML-based spreadsheet format used by StarOffice Calc and early OpenOffice.org Calc releases, particularly before the OpenDocument Spreadsheet format, .ods, became standard. StarOffice was developed by Sun Microsystems and is discontinued.

An SXC workbook can contain multiple worksheets, formulas, cell formatting, charts, print settings, and spreadsheet metadata. Existing files are most likely to be found in older business archives, backups, software-generated reports, or systems that used StarOffice or OpenOffice.org 1.x.

What the XLSX format is

XLSX is Microsoft Excel’s Office Open XML workbook format, introduced with Office 2007. It is supported by current Microsoft Excel releases, LibreOffice Calc, Apple Numbers, Google Sheets import, and many spreadsheet-processing libraries.

XLSX supports multiple worksheets, formulas, tables, charts, conditional formatting, data validation, and modern workbook metadata. It is generally the appropriate target when a recipient requests an Excel workbook or when the file must be handled by current spreadsheet software. XLSX does not store VBA macro projects; macro-enabled workbooks normally use .xlsm.

How to convert SXC to XLSX

Using LibreOffice Calc

1. Install a current desktop version of LibreOffice and open the .sxc file in Calc.
2. Check the worksheets for import warnings, missing values, formula errors, incorrect date or number formats, merged cells, charts, and print settings.
3. Select File → Save As.
4. Choose Excel 2007–365 (*.xlsx) or enter a filename ending in .xlsx in the file-type list.
5. Save the file. If Calc warns that the selected format may lose some features, choose Use Excel 2007–365 Format.
6. Close and reopen the new .xlsx file, preferably in the application that will receive it, and verify every worksheet, formula result, chart, and important total.

Save under a new filename and retain the original SXC until the XLSX copy has been checked. Renaming .sxc to .xlsx does not convert the file; the workbook must be opened and exported by spreadsheet software.

Batch conversion with LibreOffice

LibreOffice can convert files without opening its graphical interface:

Use a separate output directory to prevent overwriting the source. On Windows, the executable may be soffice.exe and may require its full installation path. For multiple files, provide an appropriate input pattern or run the command once for each SXC file.

Quality and compatibility limits

Legacy SXC features do not always map exactly to XLSX. Formulas usually transfer, but obsolete functions, external links, named ranges, array formulas, print settings, chart formatting, conditional formatting, and unusual page layouts may change during import or export. Recalculate the workbook and compare key totals with the original.

SXC files containing StarOffice or OpenOffice.org macros are not converted into native Excel VBA macros by saving as XLSX. If automation must be retained, the macro code may require manual rewriting; use .xlsm only after confirming that the macros have been converted and are safe to run.

Password-protected files require the correct password before conversion, and damaged files may need repair before Calc can open them. For critical workbooks, inspect every sheet and test formulas, links, charts, and printed output before distribution.
