Free online SXC to PDF converter

Legacy OpenOffice.org Calc files may need conversion when a submission, printer, archive, or recipient requires a PDF. PDF preserves the spreadsheet’s printed appearance and can be viewed without installing spreadsheet software.

What the SXC format is

.sxc is the spreadsheet format used by OpenOffice.org Calc 1.x and early StarOffice Calc releases. It is an XML-based, compressed document package that can contain cell values, formulas, formatting, charts, and print settings. SXC files are mainly found in older archives and systems created before OpenDocument Spreadsheet (.ods) became the standard format.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format that records the spreadsheet as pages containing rendered text, tables, charts, and graphics. It generally preserves page size, positioning, fonts, and print layout across operating systems and PDF readers. It does not preserve a spreadsheet as an editable formula model; keep the original SXC file if cell data or formulas may need future editing.

How to convert the file with LibreOffice

LibreOffice Calc is the most practical current desktop option for opening and exporting many SXC files.

1. Install LibreOffice and open the .sxc file in Calc.
2. Check the worksheets for missing fonts, changed formula results, damaged charts, merged-cell problems, and formatting differences.
3. Set the page size, orientation, margins, scaling, and print range. Use Format → Page Style for page settings and Format → Print Ranges → Define to restrict the exported area. Landscape orientation or a smaller scale can prevent wide tables from being split across pages.
4. Choose File → Export as PDF, select the required page or sheet range and PDF options, then save the output.

For batch conversion, use LibreOffice from a terminal:

Replace input.sxc with the source path and output-folder with an existing destination directory. The PDF normally receives the source file’s base name. Review the generated file because headless conversion uses the document’s saved print settings and may not expose layout problems during conversion.

Compatibility and quality checks

Modern spreadsheet applications may interpret old SXC formulas, fonts, macros, charts, and formatting differently. PDF export captures the calculated display and page layout; it does not run or preserve macros as executable spreadsheet features. Review every required worksheet in the PDF, including page breaks, print areas, repeated headers, clipped columns, blank pages, font substitutions, chart placement, and formula results.

If LibreOffice cannot open the file correctly, try a compatible older OpenOffice.org or Apache OpenOffice installation in an isolated environment, then save a verified copy as .ods before exporting. Preserve the original .sxc file alongside the PDF because conversion to PDF is not a reliable way to retain an editable spreadsheet.
