Convert SDF to PDF

A PDF is useful when a database report must be sent to someone without the original database software, printed, or retained as a fixed snapshot. An .sdf file usually needs to be opened and its contents exported or printed; changing the extension does not convert it.

What the SDF format is

.sdf most commonly identifies a Microsoft SQL Server Compact database. Older Windows, Windows Mobile, and Visual Studio applications use these files to store tables, indexes, relationships, and local application data.

The extension is not unique. Autodesk and other engineering, scientific, and geospatial applications also use .sdf for unrelated Spatial Data File formats. Identify the application that created the file before selecting software: an SDF file has no universal internal format.

What the PDF format is

PDF is a fixed-layout document format standardized as ISO 32000. It can preserve page dimensions, positioning, images, tables, and, when the exporter supports it, embedded fonts across operating systems. PDF is appropriate for reports, printed records, submissions, and read-only snapshots, but it does not preserve a database as a usable database.

How to convert a SQL Server Compact file

Use the original application or a SQL Server Compact database tool to produce a report or tabular export, then create the PDF from that output.

1. Make a backup of database.sdf and work on the copy. Do not edit a file that is still being used by its application.
2. Open the copy in SQL Server Compact Toolbox for Visual Studio or another viewer that supports the specific SQL Server Compact version. Install the matching SQL Server Compact runtime/provider if the tool cannot open the file. Enter the database password when prompted.
3. Select the required table or run a query that limits the columns and rows needed in the report. Export the results to CSV, Excel, HTML, or another format supported by the tool; if no export command exists, copy the query results into a spreadsheet.
4. Open the result in Microsoft Excel or LibreOffice Calc. Set column widths, date and number formats, page size, margins, repeating header rows, print area, scaling, and landscape orientation where necessary.
5. Choose File → Export as PDF or File → Save as PDF. On Windows, File → Print → Microsoft Print to PDF is an alternative; on macOS, use the PDF menu in the system print dialog.
6. Open the PDF and check every page for clipped columns, missing rows, incorrect character encoding, broken dates, and unreadable scaling.

For a human-readable result, build the report in the application that created the database or in a compatible reporting tool, apply filters and grouping, and use its Print or Export → PDF command. Printing a formatted report is usually better than exporting raw database rows.

Other SDF formats and online services

If the file came from a CAD, GIS, engineering, or scientific program, open it in that program or in a compatible specialist application and use its layout, plotting, or PDF export command. A GIS SDF dataset may need to be styled and placed on a map layout before export; converting its raw feature data to a table will not produce an equivalent map.

General online converters rarely support SQL Server Compact databases because an SDF database is a container, not a document with a standard page layout. For an SDF variant that a service explicitly supports, a reputable service such as CloudConvert or Zamzar can be used only after confirming the detected format and the expected output. Do not upload files containing personal, financial, medical, confidential, or proprietary data; use local software or a local PDF printer instead.

Quality and compatibility limits

The PDF contains the selected view or report, not the database structure. Tables, relationships, indexes, queries, constraints, and editable records do not remain operational in the PDF. Large tables may require multiple reports, selected columns, landscape pages, smaller margins, or deliberate page breaks.

SQL Server Compact is discontinued. Current systems may lack the required runtime, provider, or Visual Studio components, and different SQL Server Compact versions may not open interchangeably. Obtain the application that created the file or install its compatible components; renaming .sdf to .pdf cannot repair or convert it.
